Here for the Fairyland review event!

Okay, when I scrolled down your author page and saw you’d also written Scorbus I HAD to stop by! :D

Hahaha, I had the same reaction as Scorpius finding out Narcissa and Lucius are coming over! Oh, I LOVE Astoria! Headstrong and fierce Momma Bear!

I love how you placed both boys in Ravenclaw! Love love LOVE!! :D It’s enough for them both to break from their family’s traditions/expectations and to still be together happily in the same House. Ha, Albus just wanting to pretend to be ill to avoid the elder Malfoys at all costs. Mate, I feel you! What a mood.

All of Scorpius’ jobs tell us so much about him and I honestly love that – the helping others, working with Muggles, working with the vulnerable.

I also love the domesticity of this, the way Astoria does the cooking and cleaning by herself without House Elf help, and how Scorpius and Albus just start helping like it’s something they’re used to doing. And yet, you can still tell how the Malfoy’s are proper? If that makes sense.

I think you hit the nail on the head actually with “Astoria was a proper pureblood lady in many ways, but she was also progressive.” Like, you can tell they hold themselves and speak like members of the aristocracy if that’s the right word? But yet you can also tell they’re not the same as we knew Draco’s family in the books. Maybe that’s just how I imagine them, but that seems to really shine through.

God you could taste the awkwardness at that table before anyone said anything! I expected nothing less from Lucius but I’m glad Narcissa is more tolerable. Scorbus is endgame so like they had any choice hehe :D

This was a wonderful little snapshot, I loved it!

Author's Response:

Hi Kate!!

This was my only real attempt to write Scorbus, and I wrote it long before CC came out, but I'm happy with it all the same. It was fun to imagine what the boys might be like when we had nothing but the epilogue to go off of. We also didn't know anything about Astoria, and there wasn't much fanfiction with her either. So this was fun to write! I'm glad you enjoyed it! :)

Best,
Emily

Awww this is Darling! I've always liked the idea of Albus and Scorpius but never really read any? I like that you've made them so original in this one. I know this one is super old but I was scrolling through your stuff to leave a holiday gift review and it jumped out at me! I really am glad that the ending was so tame- that they were just completely nonchalant about it. We love non traumatic LGBTQ stories!

Author's Response:

Hello there!

Thank you so much for reading and reviewing! This is my only Next-Gen story, but I too like the idea of Albus and Severus as a couple, so I wanted to explore them a bit. :)  I love LGBTQIA+ stories that are just ridiculously fluffy and non-traumatic! I'm glad you enjoyed this too. Thank you again!

Best,
Emily

Hello my dear! I'm sorry for the delay, but I'm here for our February Review Swap!

I'm a big fan of Scorbus, so I figured I'd read this. It's always intimidating to meet a significant other's parents, but I love that you went a step above and did grandparents instead.  I also loved that it was clear Albus had Draco and Astoria's support leading up to this moment -- the conversation in Scorpius' room with Astoria was really heartwarming. It showcased Astoria's love for Scorpius and I thought it was wonderful how supportive she is of him and Albus.

I also liked that Draco had more of a problem with Albus being a Potter rather being another guy; at least, that's the impression that I got when we saw a bit of the flashback to that moment.  I also love how he slowly came around to accepting Albus as being a part of Scorpiu's life, even if he needed a little encouragement from Astoria to do so :P

For the record, I really just love your characterization of everyone -- but especially Astoria -- in this. I also think it's fitting that Al and Scorpius were both in Ravenclaw instead of Slytherin.

You did a fantastic job of building up to the moment of meeting Lucius and Narcissa. It really added to Scorpius' anxiety, and it was, just as Astoria said -- over in just a moment.  It seemed fitting; all of the tension and then after a moment of two, Albus is just accepted.  It's true to life; the big moments you're anticipating always go by fast. I also love that Albus mentioned Narcissa saving Harry's life; it was a good bonding moment for them and I think it warmed Narcissa's heart a little, that Harry is telling that story (and he would).

You did a great job with this! I really enjoyed reading it and I'm so glad we got partnered for the swaps this month ♥

Author's Response:

Finally getting around to responding here! :)

Thank you so much for reading and reviewing this story! I'm so happy that you liked it!

As you can see from my AP, I don't often delve into Next-Gen often, but I do really like Scorbus, so I was happy to have a chance to write about them. And I'll take any opportunity to write about the Malfoys! I love the headcanon of Astoria being really progressive and accepting. I think she could be a wonderful influence on Draco. (Who, yep, is fine that Scorpius wants to date a boy, but "why does it have to be that boy?" xD )

I'm glad the build-up paid off for you! I absolutely love that Narcissa saved Harry in canon, and I do think he'd be honest about that with his family. I imagine that when Scorpius and Albus began dating, that was one of the first stories Harry brought up. :)

Thank you again for all your comments and compliments. You're the best!

 Hi Emily,

So I just realized that I haven't read many of your stories and I've reviewed even fewer, so I thought it was about time for me to visit your AP and check out some of your stories. I hope to be able to review them all this holiday, but we'll see how much I manage to get done. Anyway. Let's get to the reading part.

Afternoon Tea sounds like a really great story. First of all, I love Scorbus so I'm really excited to be reading this. I also don't think I've ever read a "meet the family" story with Scorbus before, so I'm excited about that too. With the history between their families, you'd think it would be very awkward, but who knows? This is next gen, so things might've changed between the Malfoys and the Potter/Weasleys. Also, I like that's it afternoon tea. It sounds very formal and that's just how I imagine the Malfoys would invite someone. So yeah, I love that!

And omg! I love Scorpius and Albus. I don't know how you do it, but you really manage to show how much they love each other. And I like that they balance each other out well, and the way the talk to each other - you can really tell they've been together for some years, so amazing job with that! I always imagine Scorpius would be more nerdy and Albus would be more athletic, so I was really happy to see that in this story too. It just fit very well with how I imagine Albus and Scorpius would be together.

I also really liked the meeting. It was awkward and tense of course, but we all knew that was gonna happen. I found it very believable that Narcissa was the one to break the tension though, because I feel like she was never as into the whole pureblood thing as Lucius was (like the Narcissa we see in Permanence), so she wouldn't mind Scorpius dating Albus as much as Lucius might. And I also really liked the little comparison between Albus and Draco. I'd never thought about it before, but I can definitely see them as being a little bit similar.

Great job, Emily! I really loved it! Thanks for sharing!

- Lotte

Author's Response:

Lotte, you are literally the sweetest! If I'm ever on your side of the world again, we have to hang out. You're amazing. <3 <3

Okay, now to actually respond here!

Thank you so much for this review. It's so specific and kind. Writing this story is what made me fall in love with Scorbus as a ship. It was so fun to dive into Next Gen and see what I could do with these characters—and imagining my nerdy Scorpius and athletic Al was so enjoyable! I really love that they're this cohesive couple that moves as one in so many ways.

And I am SO happy that you liked Narcissa! I totally harkened back to her characterization in "Permanence" for this one. I'm glad you saw that!

Your compliments mean so much to me!

Thank you again!

Hiya here for CTF #5

AND YAY A SCORBUS STORY WHERE THEY'RE BOTH RAVENCLAWS! You have no idea how happy this is making me! I also love the fact that they're both already graduated and that you immediately highlight differences between them, while revealing also bits about them - like the Ravenclaw bit for instance. But you also aren't shying away from the fact that Lucius and Narcissa could be very difficult about this and that Draco wasn't the easiest about it either. I did always imagine that Astoria would be the nicer one and more progressive indeed, even before JKR confirmed this as well, so I'm happy to see that (head)canon part in this fic as well. I also love the fact that Astoria isn't backing down and helping and supporting Albus and Scorpius in any way that she can and the line where she mentioned they'd be moving in together so had me thinking about Ginny in a way. They might even like eachother or be friends despite their differences in growing up. Or, at least, I can imagine that Ginny would appreciate that in her. I also like the little tidbits about Harry's comment and opinion and it was nice to have that clarification about who's father you we're actually talking about, because it would otherwise have led to a lot of questionmarks above my head.

In any case, very well done, loved the one shot and the idea you used for it!

Author's Response:

Hello!

I'm so sorry it's taken me so long to respond to your review! I've been on an HPFF hiatus, but I'm active again on HPFT and can't wait to write again soon!

Anyhow, on to your review! I'm so glad that you liked the story! I love making NextGen characters non-Gryffindor/Slytherin. I think they're a great opportunity to delve more into Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw. I'm also really happy you liked Astoria! I'm a total Dramione shipper, but I support Draco/Astoria when I can make her awesome and progressive. Overall, I'm just happy that you enjoyed this story! Thank you so much for reviewing!

HELLO LOVELY! I'm here for CTF at HPFT. Obviously the Claws have to win. ;) You know how these things go.

I LOVE SCORBUS MEET THE PARENTS. SO, meeting the grandparents is bound to be even better. I mean there's no way that it's not going to be awkward especially with Harry Potter being the high-key bane of Lucius's existence, regardless of how Deathly Hallows turned out with Draco and their semi-patched relationship. Like is there anyway to be like 'hey, I tried to kill your dad like ten times and he sent me to wizard prison, nice to meet you, you're dating my grandson' to be casual and pleasant? I'm opting for probably not.

I feel like a table that massive that puts the much distance between every family member is probably some kind of indication of what I'd expect to expect. I'm not sure if that even makes sense. But none of them being morning people or talking to anyone is probably easier done when you have that much distance between them. Also I like that Draco calls him Al because it immediately indicates to me that there must be some kind of relationship there. Maybe I'm reading too much into it but it sounds like they're all close.

Also I'm in love with your characterization of Astoria. I can see how she'd be a great match for Draco. And I like her chastising him about how inconsiderate it is. And she's on Scorpius's side on both of these conflicts. Astoria is like the anchor of this family, constantly calming everyone. She's perfect.

Also the tell-the-parents went exactly how I would have wanted it. I'm all about Draco whining about it too. Hilarious. Cute.

'I won't even complain while you look at boring sports stuff.' Literally me to my husband every time I try to make him do something he doesn't want to.

Narcissa was perfect. I'm happy with her response. And TBH no one even cares about Lucius. He'll cope.

Author's Response:

Hi Paula!

Thank you so much for reviewing! I'm sorry it's taken so long for me to respond. But I'm back from hiatus and I'm happy to be able to reply to you now!

I'm so happy that you liked the story! I'm actually a huge Scorbus shipper after writing this story! I love imagining them as not-Gryffindor/Slytherin, and this was such a fun story to write. You're definitely right to say that Draco already likes Al--that was important to me for him to have grown. And I'm so glad that you liked Astoria! She's my favorite to write like this! If Draco can't be with Hermione (OTP!), then this sort of Astoria is a good compromise.

I'm so glad you liked the grandparents' reaction and all the characterization. Your compliments mean so much to me!

Thank you again for reviewing!

Best,

Emily

Hiya! Here with your review!

Ahh!! ScorBus!! My OTP!! ♥ ♥ I couldn't not read this when I saw it!

Loved it! Loved it, loved it, loved it! *squee* Al and Scorpius were just adorable and Astoria was so great and Draco was... Draco haha.

I can't believe that Draco sprung that on Scorpius like that! What on earth was he thinking?? Bah! Not nice, Dad! *angry glare* I loved that Astoria immediately told him that he was being stupid by not giving them any warning at all. It shows that she is not one to be pushed around by her husband and that she's good for him, because I'm sure she challenges him which is something he'd definitely need. She's a strong woman and a good mother.

I really liked that they were both Ravenclaws when they were at Hogwarts. It's nice to see something a little different when it comes to Albus and Scorpius. And what Scorpius does for a living was so creative and just wonderful. You know, just from that little snippet, that he is a caring and compassionate person. I adore your Scorpius!

Their relationship seemed so natural and effortless. Like they were truly soul mates. It made me so happy to see that.

I was so nervous reading this! You built up the tension really, really well. I was on the edge of my seat just wondering how the Malfoys were going to react to Scorpius dating Harry Potter's son. Lucius' reaction was pretty much would I would expect. Not exactly happy about him being involved with a Potter. But Narcissa was great. She was as accepting as I hoped she would be. I really loved that bit at the end about her saving Harry's life. It made me smile when she smiled and answered, ""I suppose I did. She understands exactly what her actions did, and I loved that!

This was such a great read! Thank you so much for sharing. I'm thrilled I had the chance to read it!! ♥

xoxo Meg

Author's Response:

Hi Meg!

Thank you so much for reading and reviewing! I appreciate this so much! It was so sweet of you to offer to review something, and I'm so glad that you found a story you liked. This was brand new to me -- I practically never write Next Gen; I've never written for Astoria; and I don't think I've written for Albus either. -- so I had a lot of fun. I'm so happy you liked Astoria! I really wanted to make her kind of a cool, modern-type woman who stands up to Draco. I think he'd need that firmness every once in a while. :) I'm also glad that you liked that Albus and Scorpius are Ravenclaws! I really like to think they would be different from their parents. ;) And I'm happy that you liked Scorpius's profession! I really got a good idea of what my version of him is like when I wrote this, and I like to think that he's not a mini-Draco (even though I love Draco!). As for his relationship with Albus--I'm so happy that you like that too! They're both really sweet in my mind, and I love their relationship, despite the fact that I've never written for them until now. I think they're one of my new favorites. :) Finally, I'm glad you enjoyed the ending. Thank you so much for reading and reviewing. You're the sweetest!

Hey there,

I'm here reviewing this for the Addicted to Albus and Scorpius Challenge.

I had so much fun reading this! I love that it is all angsty and emotional and I love that everyone is so nervous. You did well with the prompt and I really enjoyed how you brought it into your story.

I'm impressed that this is your first attempt at Albus/Scorpius. It feels as if you know your characters really well already. I like that we get to know a little bit about them, but that it's not too much information (so it doesn't disrupt the flow). I think this flows really well, and it's a very comfortable, enjoyable read.

It's just like Draco to invite his parents without telling anyone about it. I'm really glad that Astoria is a modern kind of pureblood and that she stands up for her son when he needs her.

And when everyone freaks out a bit about the meeting the grandparents thing, she stays reasonably calm and manages to calm Scorpius a little, too. I love the scene in the kitchen where Al and Scorpius help her finish everyhting (I wish I could use magic to clean up after baking something).

Albus really has a way with stubborn relatives. It was probably exactly the right thing to do, tell Narcissa that Harry Potter doesn't still hate the Malfoys, that he talks almost fondly of them to his children, and that he is very grateful for her saving his life. (She's probably taking herself too important, but that's just the way the Malfoys are, and I'm glad Albus recognizes that and breaks the ice in just the right way.)

I loved the end and that everyone is so accepting.

We'll try to get the results for our challenge up soon.

Thanks for your awesome entry,

~Anja

Author's Response:

Hello Anja!

First of all, I have to say thank you for issuing the challenge that inspired this story! I never knew how much fun it would be to write for Albus and Scorpius, but I enjoyed it so much! I don't dabble in Next Gen very often, so this was new for me, but I really had a great time writing it.

I'm so glad that you liked the way I portrayed the different characters! I love imagining Astoria as a bit more modern than her husband and his family. I feel like she would be the one to put her foot down and get things done, so I liked putting some of that into this story.

I'm also glad you liked the interactions with the older Malfoys, as well as the ending. Again: I really enjoyed writing this. Thank you so much for the challenge and for reading and reviewing! I'll keep an eye out for the results!

Hello Emily! I'm here for BvB!

This is such a wonderful story. I love Scorpius and Albus - they're such a sweet couple. The way you've described Astoria and Draco are wonderful as well. I think it's so easy to say that he had a strained relationship with his family, but you've shown a Scorpius that has a lovely relationship with his parents. The breakfast scene almost seems like it's setting up for cold family dynamics, so I loved that in the end, it was just that none of them were morning people.

I really enjoyed Lucius and Narcissa's reaction to Albus and Scorpius. I notice Lucius didn't actually say anything here. You've sort of left his reaction to it all up in the air... that was an interesting choice. It leaves readers thinking after we've finished the story. I can definitely see Narcissa giving up her elitist views and possibly homophobia for her grandson, so her reaction was great, but I'm wondering about Lucius now! Does he dislike him because he's Harry Potter's child? Does he dislike him because he's gay? So many possibilities here! Though I do like to think that they're not still homophobic in what? Like 2030?

Anyway, thanks for sharing this lovely story!

Stefanie

Author's Response:

Hi Stefanie!

Thank you so much for reading and reviewing! I'm so happy that you liked the story! I've never written for Albus or Scorpius before at all, nor as a couple, so this was a fun story for me! I'm really happy that you liked the dynamics between Scorpius and his parents. I had imagined that Lucius was a little annoyed that Scorpius was dating a Potter, rather than that he was gay. Maybe I'll go tweak that to make it clearer! I wasn't sure if the quick ending would work, and I'm still not too sure on it, but I'm glad you liked the story, nonetheless! Thank you again for reading and reviewing!

Oh my goodness this was so stressful to read. I had to keep clicking out of the tab and doing something else so I could chill out enough to keep going :') The thing with this story is that there's a fair amount of tension, but there's also an explicit sense that the tension and apprehension is justified. We as readers have every reason to think that something is going to go horribly wrong.

But it didn't! While Lucius may not have had the best reaction in the world, there also wasn't some kind of terrilbe explosion of rage or disgust. He mostly seemed mad about Albus being Harry's kid too, so he didn't say anything homophobic (although I'm not convinced he's not a homophobe, lol). I'm really happy about it tbh. It was unexpected but it was a nice surprise. Thank god for Narcissa ahaha.

The two things I really want to comment on here are

1) How freakin' adorable Scorpius and Albus are. You've really done such a good job with their relationship. I don't read a lot of Scorbus, but you brought a lot of love into the pairing here, and I found it really believable that they'd been together for years just based on the way they interacted with each other and everything.

2) Astoria! I love her! And the warmth between her and Scorpius was just palpable, it was so clear how much they loved each other. (And I loved that he calls her Mama :') )

I really enjoyed this, great work!

-Kayla

Author's Response:

Hi Kayla!

I'm so sorry for the delay in responding to your review! Thank you so much for reading this and reviewing it for me! I'm so happy that you liked it!

I definitely thought of the Malfoys as more annoyed that Albus is Harry's son than that their grandson is dating another man. I'm not sure if that could be consistent with canon, but I wanted Lucius to be more of the blood-purist/anti-blood traitor still than homophobic. And I love your take on "thank God for Narcissa"! Hahah. EXACTLY.

I'm so glad you liked the relationship between Scorpius and Albus! After writing this, they became one of my OTPs. And I'm so happy you liked Astoria! It's hard for me to write Draco with anyone but Hermione, but I really enjoyed this version of Astoria (as well as her relationship with her son)!

Thank you again! I'm really glad you enjoyed it!

Best,
Emily

Hi Emily! Im (finally) here for the November review swap, and sorry in advance for any typos as I'm writing this on my phone on the train. I know I said I was gonna read your novel next but then I found a scorbus and couldn't resist.

I loved this! Your characterization is once again superb, and in the case of Lucius and Narcissa, very consistent with how you wrote them in Permanence, which I appreciated :D I really like how you write Astoria and Draco, as well. Astoria is just as I would have imagined her, kind of a breath of fresh air and quite different from Draco, but in a way that clearly has made him change into a better person over time. I love seeing the way she interacts with her family. Draco's initial reaction to Albus was hilarious btw, him whining and suggesting any other guy for Scorpius to date, even though the guy was straight haha. It seems his reservations were less out of hatred for Harry than it was just annoyance at how the universe had to spite him. like "ughhhh reallllly? fine then". It shows how the animosity between Harry nd Draco at school is now nothing more than just a decades-old school thing.

Scorpius and Albus are such a sweet couple. I love hhow you show their relationship and how each  fits in with the other's family  through these little details - how Albus' sister bought Scorpius some nice robes, and Scorpius' mother suggests those robes for the tea. It says a lot about how much each of them is accepted into the other's family. And it was sweet how Albus knows how important this is to Scorpius because Scorpius actually offers to look at 'boring sports stuff' with Albus haha.

Lucius doesn't seem thrilled at first to say the least, but I assume that once he realized the rest of his family accepts Albus, that he begins to as well. And I love that what finally made a difference was Albus saying how honored he is to meet Narcissa. A little flattery goes a long way, especially to someone who enjoys being flattered :p And she did save Harry's life, so there's that. It was nice to see that they got along and I hope Lucius comes around in time!

This was a great story. lovely work on this.

Author's Response:

Hi dear!

I am so sorry that it's taken me so long to respond to your lovely review! As I'm sure you understand, life got crazy around the holidays.

I'm so glad you read my Scorbus! I literally loved writing this, and it made me ship them forever and ever. I'm really glad you liked the characterization! I hadn't even realized I'd made Lucius and Narcissa consistent with Permanence, but now I'm super proud of myself! And Draco...oh Draco, haha. I wanted to portray him as kind of a clueless dad who just "doesn't get it" but has good intentions over all.

I'm also glad you liked Scorpius and Albus! I'd never really written for them in the past, so this was in many ways their defining moment in my FF world. I'm so happy you liked it.

Thank you so much for all of your compliments. Reading this (again) made my night.

Best,
Emily

Omg this is amazing. I loved it.

Their relationship is so sweet. I like their dynamic a lot - there's clearly so much love and affection there, and while you told us that with things like how long they've been together and their plans to imminently move in together, but you showed it, too. They know each other so well - Scorpius bribing Albus with promises to go look at Quidditch stuff made me smile - I've actually been in relationships where either bookstore trips or soccer matches were used to bribe me into things I didn't want to do. :P

I loved your headcanon for Astoria, and Narcissa being the one to help alleviate the tension worked so well for me, because it felt very consistent with her character as we saw it in the books. I think that Lucius bought into the pureblood superiority nonsense and really made it part of his identity, but I'm not sure that Narcissa was ever as invested in purebloodedness as she was in her family. Things like that, Draco's comment about Paul Nott (which made me laugh because my headcanon is that the next-gen!Notts are Scorpius's cousins), and the similarities between Draco and Albus really kept this fairly light-hearted, even with the high stakes on the table.

One tiny bit of CC - you characterize Al's eyes as brown here, but I'm pretty sure the epilogue specifically said that they were green, right? It's super minor, but I thought I'd mention it.

Overall, though, this was well-written and absolutely adorable. <3

Author's Response:

Hello dear!

I am so happy that you liked this story! Writing it got me hooked on Scorbus, so I'm really fond of it as well. I loved playing with their personalities and making them my own version of Albus and Scorpius than what I've usually read. And I'm so glad you liked Astoria and the elder Malfoys! As you know, I'm a Dramione shipper 'til the day I die, but if Draco has to be with his canon-wife, I want her to be awesome and balance him out. And I like to think that Narcissa would've gotten over herself a bit as she aged. Like you said: family above all.

The part where Draco asks about Paul Nott is one that I just had to put in. I just imagine all those conservative parents who are trying to figure out their LGBT+ kids and attempting to be helpful, like, "But what about so-and-so? The dentist's son? He's gay, right? I'll set you up!" I imagine Draco would be just as tactless.

And you're right about Al's eyes! I think I was just internally wishing I never had to hear "You have your mother's eyes!" again. Blehhh. Ah, well, I'll leave it for now.

Thank you so much for reviewing! I'm really glad you liked it!

Best,
Emily
