Reviews For a murder (but not a crime)

Hi hi! <3

THIS IS SUCH AN INTENSE OPENING CHAPTER, I LOVE IT. I must confess, I have watched neither The 100 nor How to Get Away With Murder, so I cannot quite say what I am doing here, but I am so glad I clicked on this!!! I love the appearance of Emma in this AU -- she’s one of the characters I am very familiar with, haha. I love the way that you begin with this tense, thriller-like chase, leading into a quick-paced, fragmented dialogue that left me so unbelievably curious about what crime they’d committed. What happened! What does the snow globe have to do with it! Did anything happen on purpose!

The fact that there appears to be a dead body is quite frightening omg. I’m so looking forward to seeing what happens!!

Love, Eva

hi ashley, i’m finally here with your challenge entry review!

you’ve set the scene so well with these opening lines and this opening scene. it’s dark and full of action, and hints at something much bigger having happened. and you’ve already established a lot of tension between these four characters, who are all clearly in on something together but also clearly aren’t all super friendly either. i’m excited to learn more about them and the situation they’re in as the story unfolds!

and of course, they’re all arguing over how to handle this specific situation because they’re all such different people - and i love that it eventually comes down to flipping a coin because there’s no way they’ll agree on what to do otherwise.

i’m also super curious what the snowglobe has to do with things - was it the murder weapon? or does it have some other significance?

and so they’re going back for the body and to clean up the scene of the murder - that’s going to be an interesting adventure for sure! i’m also immensely curious about all the mysterious elements you’ve set up in this first chapter - who’s been murdered? and why? and how? i wanna know all the things!

this was an excellent opening chapter and i’m definitely going to be coming back for future chapters to see what happens next! thanks for entering my challenge :)

hi ashley, i’m here for my end of the review swap! (for a second i was questioning whether i was reviewing the right story lol.)

ooh, right away we are put straight into the action! i wonder what the shapes chasing perri were? also, everything about the beginning is so disorienting to me, and i feel like that might be a good description for how perri feels running away from these obscure shapes, and trying to get back to her friends.

oh damn, a murder of all things? that’s some deep shit they got into, i wonder how they’ll all manage to clean themselves of the evidence? and what is the hard work perri references? i’m very curious right now lol.

i’ve got to be honest with you, i’ve never watched ‘how to get away with murder’ so this entire story is going to be a hell of a surprise. but you’ve done super well with building up the suspense and characterizing all these characters in such a small amount of words! already the dynamic of the group seems to be fraught with tension, so i imagine this might continue through out the rest of the story.

this is a great first chapter! thanks for writing! xx

Dear Ashley, I'm here for our review swap on Twitter.

This was a well written, short piece of fiction. I'll admit, I don't watch 'How to get away with Murder', but it was pretty understandable without having seen the show. Of course, I don't know the characters, but you've given me enough to understand each one.

It is always a good idea to get rid of the evidence, so retreiving the snowglobe was good. Even if the others freaked out about having it in their possession now. A good wipe down and it'll be 'good as new'.

As for going back for the body? Kinda crazy, I admit. Where are they going to put that? Kind of mind boggling at the possibilities. True? Hopefully the coin toss didn't lead them into further trouble... sounds like this Wells person might be another problem.

Great job on this!

Hey Claire,

I think you know by now that I'm not familiar with the 100 but the how to get away with murder part excites me so much! I love that show and this chapter is short but it sets up the story perfectly. It really hooked me into the action as obviously it's confused and we don't know much about whats happening yet. It has gave me vibes of the show though which is so cool.

I think your first line was so good. It's really effective at grabbing the attention of the reader. I loved that 'sliced at her throat' phrasing because it makes it seem so much more dramatic and foreboding perhaps even foreshadowing. A hint at the crime but it really worked for me as a reader. I think this works so nicely as a first chapter is because it lays out a lot of questions for the reader to get stuck into. What's happened? why is she running?  what events have led up to this crime? I could go on.

I'm also really interested in the dynamic between the group. I think there is going to be a lot of bickering within the group as they try to cover it up. I thought the dialogue was really nicely written out considering there were quite a few people within that scene. I loved the law reference in that exchange! I just love the link back to the show, it's perfect placed! I can't really comment on the characterization comparing it to the 100 but I liked the hints about the character's personalities that you've shown from the chapter.  I think they're been diverse and interesting set of characters to work with in this plot line.

I really enjoyed this chapter and the set up a really promising plot line! I'll be reading more of this when it comes out!

Abbi xx
