If there’s one thing Iain misses about Dublin, it’s waking up in the morning to the sun rising over the Liffey. His family’s flat wasn’t right on the river, but it was close enough that if he peeked out his window and angled his head just so, he could get a glimpse of soft orange sunlight sparkling on the water.

He reflects on this as he stands there looking out his window, the overflowing bins and suspicious stain in the alleyway looking exactly the same as always. Fitting for a perfectly ordinary morning — except that he’s not having one of those, because Sirius had stayed for breakfast.

...Sirius had stayed for breakfast, after showing up last night and telling him in a panic that people are trying to kill him.

He doesn’t know why he expected the alleyway to look different.

Sometimes you get locked out of Gryffindor Tower and decide the best course of action is to sleep in the Room of Requirement. Sometimes you do that with one of your best friends, who also happens to be the object of your massive crush.

And sometimes, the Room of Requirement only gives you one bed.

He should leave, he thinks, his heart hammering in his chest as he watches the rise and fall of Iain's breathing. He should do it now, while Iain is asleep - he can leave the spare key on the bedside table and avoid the messiness of a real goodbye. Because Iain wants him to stay, and Sirius can't say no. He'd tried, he really had, but he'd caved so easily that he might as well not have bothered.

Dear Sirius,

You told me to keep you posted on what's happening at Hogwarts, so here goes - I don't know if you've heard, but the Triwizard Tournament's happening this year and on Saturday night I got picked as a fourth champion. I don't know who put my name in the Goblet of Fire, because I didn't. The other Hogwarts champion is Cedric Diggory, from Hufflepuff.
