The Giant Squid

I was looking at a meme that was asserting that the presence of a mundane Giant Squid in the Great Lake at Hogwarts was an underappreciated phenomena, specifically that magical people ALSO find cephalopods incredibly fascinating.

Here's the thing: Unless the lake in the midst of the Scottish Highlands is a saltwater lake, that's no mundane Squid. In spite of the species being pervasive throughout the world, even to the point of being able to hunt out of the water or unscrew the lid of a jar, there are no species of cephalopod that inhabit fresh water

So I postulate that there is indeed something magical about the Giant Squid at Hogwarts. JK Rowling suggested that the Lake may be a portal to other waters in the world, but never followed that idea. Is the Great Squid a guardian? Or is merely it something that Hagrid collected in his travels and brought back for a giggle and got rather out of hand, like all of his other abnormally large pets? I rather doubt that, as I suspect it takes a long time for a Squid to grow to that size (barring magic!)

What do you think? Is the squid Magical or Mundane?

I mean, even if it WERE mundane, the fact that it's a giant squid but can be occasionally seen/literally anyone is aware it even LIVES in the lake is already wild??? even if it were salt water, don't they live so far down they wouldn't come up unless you baited a line?

Makes you wonder how deep that lake really is! Maybe he likes the sun, or someone feeds it. Can you imagine what they have to stock to keep it fed?

I do not have an answer to this question, but I just wanted to say that this blog is everything and I appreciate that you are asking this question.

Actually, I do have a hypothesis: It's a species of squid that is yet undiscovered by Muggle scientists and is only known to Magizoologists. Which, then, raises its own questions. If as muggles, we are unaware of species that are only known to magical folks, are there species for which the opposite is true? Like, for example, maybe wizards have never heard of dolphins. I mean, it's possible. Food for thought XD

I find your idea interesting, however the magical creatures are hidden on purpose from mundane eyes but mundane creatures I order to be unknowable by magical people would have to be by definition magical in some way. Like an animal who can only be seen by nonmagical eyes. It almost hurts my reason to figure out how that happened. On the other hand I suppose that creatures created in labs might be ones that most magical folk would have little interest. At least until they were forced to take notice.
