earthquakes in croatia

i posted this on twitter already but i know some of you don't follow me there and my account is set to private so... :kris:

two days ago, two earthquakes hit central croatia resulting in extensive damage in the towns of petrinja, sisak, glina and the villages around them. yesterday, an even bigger earthquake (6.3 magnitude) hit the same area. the entire city centre of petrinja is ruined with numerous collapsed buildings, it's the same in sisak and glina (in which 90% houses got destroyed), with houses in villages around them also destroyed. the hospitals in petrinja and sisak have had to evacuate their patients due to the damage.

as of right now there are 7 reported dead, including a little girl, and many more are hurt (there are no conclusive reports as to how many because the numbers keep rising). this is one of the poorest areas in croatia, previously heavily devastated by the homeland war. thousands of people have lost everything, the damage is massive. this earthquake was a lot bigger than the one that hit zagreb, our capital city, back in march.

if you can help with donations, here are two links:

+croatian red cross - unfortunately, they don't accept paypal or credit cards, just banking with a swift code provided

+solidarna foundation - this foundation previously already helped with the damages from the earthquake in march and other good causes and they do accept paypal and credit cards along with mobile/internet banking. previously it was only in croatian but i've edited in the link to the english version of the site that fully works and deleted my screenshots since they're no longer needed. though, you still need to enter the amount in HRK (croatian kuna - kn) (1 usd = 6,16 hrk / 1 eur = 7,54 hrk / 1 gbp = 8,31 hrk) - you can also just select one of the offered amounts.

thank you ♥️

(if i find more links, i'll put them as a reply and edit them here. i was reluctant to include personal gofundmes because i'm not entirely sure how they plan on helping/giving the money)

Kris! Thank you so much for writing this blog post. The pictures are devastating, and I hope that things are on the mend (all people accounted for, minimal deaths, treatable injuries, buildings being repaired, etc.).

To help in a way that I can, I've donated 200,00 kn. ❤️❤️❤️ All the solidarity hugs.

@kuusi palaa thank you!! :stitch-2:

an update: the death count from the earthquake itself stayed 7, though yesterday a volunteer died when he fell from a roof he was helping to fix, so in reality it's 8. no one is missing, and it was so lucky that they managed to find a lot of the trapped people still alive. the ground is still shaking and at this point i'm not even sure how many of these smaller earthquakes/aftershocks we've had. due to numerous volunteers, the buildings are getting repaired, but there are so many of them that will have to be taken completely down due to structural damage, it will be a long long while until the people in the affected area have homes that are not temporary.

i've forgotten to update the first post to reflect this but as you can see in abby's screenshot the solidarna foundation now has pages in english (and german) and i've linked to the english version in my first post, removing the screenshots that are no longer needed.

as of december 31st, the solidarna foundation has raised €605,211.75, and as of january 3rd the red cross has raised €4,893,190.22
