there's something incredibly delicious about sinking your teeth into a twisting, turning, grim-dark mystery and that's exactly what this story is. it's dark, it's dangerous - there's this sense throughout it that something's not quite right but you can't say exactly what - and when you're rooting for Evan to get to the bottom of the mystery and solve the case, you almost don't want him to because you know solving it is only going to lead to something bigger and badder than what he's already uncovered. the characters are wonderful - they're all incredibly relatable and sympathetic, in their own ways, and it's so easy - almost too easy! - to get invested in them and their futures; not always a good thing in a noir novel! abby doesn't just stop there, with a fascinating plot and intriguing characters, though: it's a story which tackles real-life issues like poverty and ptsd with a real sensitivity.
