kris' writing is always gorgeous: dark and deadly, with layers of angst and drama and a real flair for finding that line between going right to the edge making you as the reader hurt and struggle and feel almost too much with the characters, and falling over into just going too far. lily/sirius is almost a ship made for her writing alone: it's deep and messy and incredibly beautifully tragic - it's destructive romance done exactly as destructive romance should be. a masterclass in secret, obsessive, tragic romances - and how to make your readers fall in love with them. lily and sirius are perfect: they both have so much depth to them in this and it's a depth which highlights the darker, sadder, more difficult parts of their characters. neither of them are really nice (and james hovers in this fic, like a kind of ghost through the narrative), but they don't have to be: they're perfectly imperfect characters. lily's outsider status as a muggleborn in a pureblood-centered world, in a pureblood-centered war; sirius being thrown out of his own family - they're given space to breathe in this fic and kris transforms them from little mentions in the original, to bitterly defining things in this and it's so so so good. tragically good in all the best, best ways
