melanie is a fantastic writer of the dark and the gritty and the tumultuous, and in this she shows how good she is at the smaller, sweeter, lighter parts of life, too: from family standing up for each other, to family standing up to each other - not always easy and not always right - to the quiet times where they're just... together, and the hard times when perhaps they're really, really not. the characters are sympathetic in different ways, and each new chapter offers a fresh, slightly-slanted perspective on the characters through the years as they grow (and their family does too, in different ways). they're perfectly imperfect and it's no surprise really that melanie's known as the weasley queen when she writes stories like this
it's technically a collection of one-shots, each one an entire story which can stand on its own, but really, at its heart it's a single, complete story about family and the bonds which tie people together by accident of birth and the tremors they can leave in their wake, good and bad and just annoying
