this is a story which sums up deni's writing style in a neat, beautiful, heart-wrenching package: short, concise, punchy writing with beautiful, fragile-but-strong, hurt characters in real, raw human situations. it's so good, like everything she writes, and it's a style which is so incredibly captivating. unsurprisingly, with the advisories it has, it's not a happy or light story but it's addictive all the same: it's the kind of thing which leaves you thinking after you've finished reading it - and aching yourself, too, because of the impossible situation dom's in and the heartbreak which comes from it. 

deni's characterisation is always flawless - dom is a bundle of conflicting, contradicting traits: strong and fragile, defiant and not, loyal and protective but also keeping secrets she shouldn't be keeping. and the relationships in this story shine, whether its dom and the toxic relationship she's trapped in in a whirlpool of love and fear, or dom and her siblings - a real wistful note to how she thinks about them. it's elegant and evocative and solemnly heartwrenching, with a real power in it
