okay so i don't usually read regency era books (or like...idk even if there's another era that's similar?? doesn't matter) mostly just because i haven't really encountered some that intrigued me but fucking hell did i get hooked on this story!
melanie truly magnificently transfers the harry potter characters we all know and love into this era and spins them on their heads into making them characters we can really believe are organically *them* as we know them from canon, with their distinct personalities, quirks and all that good stuff but definitely with her own take on them.
my favourite character is so far uncle billius because he's hilarious and i love that there's this one person in the weasley family who i firmly believe leans waaaayyyyy more into the black family part of his gene pool, but honestly, i think i would read an entire book about melanie's billius and would never get bored.
but! right now (up until what i've read so far, i really need to catch up!) we mostly follow three (developing........slowly...........) relationships:
-
angelina and fred and george which is just a really messy but hot love triangle that's so complicated with so many things people aren't saying to each other that i don't know how it's going to get untangled but until that happens i am very happily along for the drama ride. fred and angelina is the hot part of this triangle while george and angelina are the slowest of slow burns part of it but i don't doubt that when they eventually get there it's also going to be hot. but. for now.......... fred fucks
- harry and ginny - okay after uncle billius my favourite is harry because his level of snark is insane and melanie writes him perfectly and he's the type of harry that's the 'there's no need to call me sir, professor' harry. he's also kinda a perfect foil for ginny who is a smidge spoiled but so so layered and fun to read about but harry is also super blunt and talks bluntly with her and it's refreshing because she's used to men not being like that, yk? so i am very very excited to see how they get from like vague very mild annoyance at times to being in loooove and it's going to be awesome
- percy and penelope dawlish - they're not endgame, and idk if they'll actually be a couple, but they work kinda perfectly together?? like even just as friends if they end up being friends, it's a quiet sort of companionship even though penelope has some strong opinions on women and their place in the world in that time period and i love her character for it. i am very intrigued to see what happens with her!
anyhow. if you're looking for a humorous story with an amazing ensemble cast and slowly developing romance, this is the story for you and you won't be able to stop reading, trust me
