The Seventh Gate
The Seventh Gate by @Starpuff
Every now and then, I come across a story which grabs onto my attention and refuses to let it go. The latest FFT obsession of mine is this beautifully-written novel set in the US, following the exploits of nomaj-born Willow Carter as she navigates her first year at school. Having accidentally discovered she's a mage, Willow is invited to attend Magus Academy to develop her magical abilities. Sound straightforward enough? Wrong. From the very beginning, Willow finds herself deeply embroiled in a centuries-old mystery, along with four new friends. There's drama. There's a strong link to indigenous history. There's a mind-boggling plot (or several). There are twists and turns and a whole host of fascinating characters, including a poor boy trapped for decades as a manticore. And some pretty mean kids. It's a story which really draws you in and compels you to keep reading.
The work that must have gone into building this fantasy world is awe-inspiring. Apart from a few snippets linking this story to canon, it's essentially original fiction, and the detail is immense without being overburdening. I'd encourage anyone to delve in and enjoy it.
