Howdy Lions! Below you will find the final rules governing our April Review Event. Please note that this version supersedes any prior version or understandings.

Gameplay

Placing the Flag

When placing the flag there are three (3) primary rules-based considerations: (1) eligibility of the prospective Flag Author, (2) eligibility of the prospective Flag Story, and (3) location of the prospective Flag Story.

Flag Author Eligibility

In order to be a viable Flag Author for the purposes of this competition, the member must meet three requirements: (1) sorting, (2) activity, and (3) prior use. With respect to sorting, each team’s Flag Author must be a member of their own house. With respect to activity, each team’s Flag Author must have either made a post on the HPFT Forums or uploaded a chapter to the HPFT Archive on or after 1 October 2016. With respect to prior use, the same Flag Author cannot be used more than once for the duration of the event.

Flag Story Eligibility

In order to be a viable Flag Story for the purposes of this competition, the story must meet three requirements: (1) anonymous or unregistered user reviews must not be blocked (at least for the duration that it will serve as Flag Story), (2) the Flag Story cannot have been used previously during the event, and (3) the story must comply with the ToS and Site Guidelines.

BEWARE: Authors may post their stories in different forms on different archives – the burden of compliance is on you.

Location

Flag Stories are also limited to those posted on an online archive which: (1) enables reviewing of at least 1000 characters without requiring account registration to do so, (2) allows unregistered users to post under a differentiable pseudonym, and (3) displays at least a datestamp on reviews.

If the story is published on another archive and not cross-published at HPFT, the opposing team will be notified of the archive on which it is published.*

Captains may agree to limit the scope of their flag designations to HPFT or HPFT and other specifically-named archives by consent prior to a match commencing upon notice to the referee(s).**

*HEAD REFEREE’S NOTE: I have deliberated heavily on the multi-archive issue. Because not everyone has evenly migrated to HPFT and our archive is fairly new, I don’t want to disadvantage people by restricting it to HPFT only without far more notice. However, without more stringent limitations on Flag Authors and Stories it would, in my estimation, be next to impossible for competitors to locate the flag in a day, even working in numbers, ceaselessly. So...I believe people need to know at least that much about where to look.

**If all four (4) Captains agree to a scope limitation for the duration of competition, please notify me by PM.

Active Play

Mechanics

When play commences, members of your team will begin reviewing stories written by members of the opposing house. Each time a review is left, the reviewer should post a link to it in the gameplay thread in their CR, where they will then be notified of the outcome.

Each review left carries five (5) potential outcomes: (1) a statement that they have been jailed, (2) a statement that they have successfully freed a teammate from jail, (3) a statement that they have been jailed, but have located the "flag author", (4) a statement that they have been jailed, but have located the "flag story" (if the flag is in a multi-chapter fic), or (5) a statement that they have captured the flag (accomplished by leaving a review on the precise chapter of the specific story the other team has designated as its flag).

While an individual is in jail, they may not post further reviews. In order to escape jail, a housemate must review the same chapter of the same story as the person in jail - thus "freeing" them. The individual posting the “jailbreak” review will not be jailed themselves. Posting further reviews while in jail will result in “solitary confinement”, where the offending member is ineligible to participate for one (1) hour.

Review Requirements

In order to be valid, reviews must be a minimum of 1000 characters. Greetings and sign-offs are categorically excluded from this count. Treatment of generic praise will be considered by the referee(s), but is expected to be limited. We are looking for meaningful observations and feedback. Failure to meet this character requirement will result in “solitary confinement”, where the offending member is ineligible to participate for one (1) hour.

REVIEWS MUST BE NEW. Cross-posting reviews will trigger forfeiture of the match by the offending house, disqualification of the perpetrator from the event, and removal of any points earned by the perpetrator based on the number of reviews they have left. This rule will have retroactive effect, such that violations discovered later may be used to reverse results and subtract points.

Though reviews are encouraged to be made using registered accounts on the appropriate archive, if a member does not possess an account on a target archive and does not wish to register just for this competition, they should utilize their HPFT forum username as their pseudonym when posting the review.

Captains

The designated representatives already selected will serve as your house Captains. In the event of a suspected rules violation(s) or misapplication of existing rules, a Captain should immediately PM the designated referee(s) and opposing Captain. The referee(s) will post in the gameplay threads upon receipt to announce that the action is under review. Play should halt immediately from the time the referee(s) post in the gameplay threads.

Because CTF is not sign-up-limited, Captains are also responsible for submitting an up-to-date Master List of eligible house authors by HPFT forum username and their pennames, with archives on which the pennames are used notated parenthetically, prior to each match. This list should be as broad as possible and contain the relevant information for any author that the house on whose behalf it is submitted knows or reasonably believes may be utilized as a Flag Author. These will be provided by the referee(s) to the opposing Captain for convenience.

Victoire

Each round will conclude when one (1) team captures the flag. The first to do will be declared the winner of the round.

At the conclusion of the five (5) rounds, whichever house has won the most rounds will be declared the winner of the match.

House Points

Each valid review left will earn that member’s house a point (1 PPR). In addition, at the end of the competition, houses will earn bonus points based upon their rank-order placement in the final standings. Standings will be determined according to the number of matches won, with the following tie-breakers: (1) number of rounds won; (2) total reviews left.

Please use this thread to seek final clarifications before play commences. I am looking forward to a month of fun with all of you!

OFFICIAL ADDENDUM - Released 10:56 PM GMT 1 April 2017

Pre-Reviewing

To clarify the existing language in the rules regarding jail, be advised that pre-reading stories and pre-typing reviews before being released should not take place. Referees are capable of examining release times and new review times and making educated determinations about whether they believe pre-reviewing has taken place. Punishment for pre-reviewing is "solitary confinement".

Exception

If no referee has posted in your gameplay, planning, or rules thread for thirty (30) minutes after you have been jailed, you may proceed to pre-review as described above, but remain prohibited from posting.

Referees

While Kevin (TidalDragon) serves as Head Referee for this competition and will actively referee in all three (3) phases of the round-robin, any other staffer may serve as a Referee in any round of any match. Any interpretations made by any Referee should be treated as if issued by the Head Referee or by your designated Match Referee. While questions should first be forwarded to your designated Match Referee, if that person is not online or active please direct questions and concerns to the staffer who is presently refereeing.

OFFICIAL ADDENDUM #2 - Released 10:21 PM GMT 10 April 2017

Post-Round Review Period

Following every round, there will be a thirty (30) minute review period during which any and all suspected rules violations are to be raised via PM to all of the following: abhorsen., Aphoride, LadyL8, TidalDragon, and TreacleTart.

Failure to report suspected violations in this time-frame will result in the waiver of any violations not specifically raised via PM during this period.

Thank you for setting this, Kevin and Kaitlin.

I forgot one more important thing.

Can we put a flag on both of yours?
