Congratulations - you’ve found your Herbology OWL!  The task at hand is to prove your ability to handle some challenging magical plants.  We do like to avoid having OWL students handle anything too damaging...but if you continue on to take your NEWT in this class, don't expect us to go easy on you there.

 

This is one of your core OWLs, and you are required to pass it before your final exams end on June 28. If you're ready to start it, you must post in this thread prior to making any of the posts/reviews/stories it requires. Be aware that though you are free to begin this exam at any time, once you sit down your house cannot begin another exam until you’ve completed this one. Keep in mind that the higher your score, the more points you'll earn, and you may find that a higher mark is a prerequisite to moving onto another exam or area.

 

To pass this OWL, you must meet the following requirements.

 

Supplies:  Every gardener needs tools and supplies, especially when working with magical plants.  The required item for this OWL is dragon dung fertilizer.  You MUST have it in order to proceed.  The optional supplies for this OWL are dragonhide gloves and an item that varies depending on which level you choose.  You can find these items elsewhere in the maze or potentially purchase them in Hogsmeade.  You may proceed without the optional supplies, but you do so at your own risk!  Your exam will be more difficult without them.  You may not leave the exam to obtain any of the optional items.  You may only use what you have with you when you begin.

 

To receive an A-Acceptable, you must feed the Chinese Chomping Cabbages.

 

• Optional item:  carrots
  
  • If you chose to proceed without the carrots, you must write a haiku about carrots instead.
    

  [*]Write 400 words related to Herbology class and/or the greenhouses—students attending a lesson, a professor making lesson plans, what the greenhouses are like in the summer when students are gone, etc.  You must mention Chinese Chomping Cabbages.  You may write in any format and distribute the task amongst your house however you wish.

  [*]Post 1 story recommendation in which a magical plant is mentioned.

 

If you have chosen to take your exam without the dragonhide gloves, you will receive some bites from the Chinese Chomping Cabbages.  As a penalty, the above requirements are increased to 500 words and 2 story recommendations for the Acceptable mark.

 

 

To receive an E-Exceeds Expectations, you must prune the Fanged Geraniums.

 

• Optional item:  pruning shears
  
  • If you chose to proceed without the pruning shears, you must leave 2 reviews on stories in which a magical plant is mentioned.
    

  [*]Write 500 words related to Herbology class and/or the greenhouses—students attending a lesson, a professor making lesson plans, what the greenhouses are like in the summer when students are gone, etc.  You must mention Fanged Geraniums.  You may write in any format and distribute the task amongst your house however you wish.

  [*]Post 2 story recommendations in which a magical plant is mentioned.

 

If you have chosen to take your exam without the dragonhide gloves, you will receive some bites from the Fanged Geraniums.  As a penalty, the above requirements are increased to 600 words and 3 story recommendations for the Exceeds Expectations mark.

 

 

To receive an O-Outstanding, you must collect Bubotuber pus.

 

• Optional item:  glass bottles
  
  • If you chose to proceed without glass bottles, you must design an advertisement for glass bottles instead.  The advertisement must include an image of a glass bottle and text (at minimum, the price needs to be listed).  It does not have to be fancy; you can draw it in Paint if necessary.
    

  [*]Write 600 words related to Herbology class and/or the greenhouses—students attending a lesson, a professor making lesson plans, what the greenhouses are like in the summer when students are gone, etc.  You must mention Bubotubers.  You may write in any format and distribute the task amongst your house however you wish.

  [*]Post 3 story recommendations in which a magical plant is mentioned.

 

If you have chosen to take your exam without the dragonhide gloves, you will get Bubotuber pus on your hands and break out in boils.  As a penalty, the above requirements are increased to 700 words and 4 story recommendations for the Outstanding mark.

 

 

Once you finish these tasks to your liking, submit your story or stories to the queue and post the author name/story title below.  Please do not include any indication in your story summary or notes that the piece(s) are written for the house cup.  Also post links to your recommendations, as well as any reviews you may have left.  Post haikus or advertisements below if applicable.

 

Should you run into difficulties, you’re free to take a fail - but be aware that you won’t be able to change your mind later, and it will result in the NEWT for this subject and (potentially) related subjects, along with any advantages passing them bestows, being permanently inaccessible to you even if you can find the exams themselves.

 

Reward for passing:  If you received an A, select one of the following items.  If you received an E, select two.  If you received an O, select three.

Please do not include any indication that requirements for this exam are linked to the house cup outside of your house, either in the posts/reviews/stories themselves or on social media. You only have one chance to submit your exam, so choose what mark you want to aim for carefully.
