Name Your Devices

Selene

Recommended Posts

Earlier on Twitter a discussion came up on the names of devices.  Because lets be honest, Selene gives things names and nicknames.  Example my cat Tiger is affectionately called Fatty which is short for...-sigh- Fat Fatty No Parents.  He earned that for his constant lovable harassment playing Portal 2.

Anyway!  Do you name your devices or things around you?

My car is called Spartacus (or Spartacar) for his sandy gold color.  My Macbook is named Cesare after Cesare Borgia (mainly The Borgias version) and my Xbox 360 is named Hernandez.

Share your names here, HPFTers!

Well I am typing to you from River, my laptop.  I have a tablet named Loki (it's okay he'd the white and thust good Loki).  My current Car is Kili.

Former names.... Before Kili was Lily a lily gree beetle and before her was Ewan (EuwEuw) who was my first and my love. (I miss him so!) (He was lost in a flood otherwise I'd still have him.)

Before River was "Sexy" (after the Tardis) then there was I don't remember his name or the one before that either.  Maybe one was Marshal (it was before I took on the name)? Then my first was Johnny (I don't miss him)

I like naming things and I love nicknames.  My cats are Tinkerbelle and Spinx but I call them all sorts of names.  Tinky, Tink, Tinky Stinky, Tinky Bell, Littlest cat, little cat, Spinxy, sweetie, imp, other cat.  I also dub both of them by babies/sweeties.

My first two phones had no names, and all my iPods have had names based on different music playing devices - but a few years back I started naming all my gadgets after the Greek muses. It started out with my phone, Kalliope, from the muse of epic poetry, because poetry is spoken (and also a pun on 'call'), and then I named my laptop Mneme, after the muse of memory. Next up was my tablet, which I'm typing on right now, which I called Melpomene after the muse of singing and tragedy, as you can use your tablet for multiple things, including listening to music and watching movies. And the latest addition to the family, after Kalliope broke, is my current phone Euterpe, the muse of music and especially flute playing and according to some, lyric poetry, which makes her fit in as the successor to Kalliope.

So, that was all, I think. I don't have a car, my bike came pre-named (Amanda), and I've never named a pet or a child or anything.

The only technology I've ever named are my laptops. The first one I got within the year before I went of to college and that one was named Fred. The second one, which was bought, because I still needed a laptop for school and Fred needed to be sent off for several weeks to be fixed, was Slim. Named so mainly because Slim was smaller and much more compact than Fred, who was very big and heavy to carry around. And then after Fred eventually died and I was only using Slim, my mom decided she preferred my laptop to the new one she'd just bought and wanted to trade. So I agreed, and I named that one Tank.

Tank lasted me for a quite a few years, but around the Christmas before last, lost his backlight in the screen and needed to be replaced, and that's when I finally bought my very own laptop with my own money and his name is Jack.

I've occasionally called my car "Sexy" (after the Tardis, of course) but other than that it doesn't really have a name. Sometimes "baby" when it's acting up.

My cats on the other hand have had so many nicknames along with their own names! One is Poohbear, who's nicknames are: Buttercup (used to be Butterball, but then she lost a lot of weight), Sneaky Snake (she's a sneak!), Whiney Cat (I've called several cats this, but she's the current one). Mattie (Poohbear's sister from the same litter) gets called Muffin, or Miss Muffin. And the third cat, Angel, mainly gets called Fatbutt, because obvious reasons, and she's very demanding when it comes to food.

I name my cars, but I've never named anything else.

My first car was a silver 1991 Buick century. It was a piece of crap and barely went over 55 mph without shaking. It had this black stripe down the side of it, so I named it Greased Lightning.

After that I had a dark green 1996 Chevy Lumina. I named her Lola the Lumina and used to sing the song Lola by The Kinks to her. She was cute and had a lot of power.

Then I had a small red 2002 Hyundai Accent. I named her Ginger, because she was red. Not to clever there haha.

Now I own a white 2010 Toyota Matrix. She's my baby and my favorite car I've owned get. Her name is Hedwig, because I take off and go for rides in her when I can't deal. So she's my escape from the Muggle world. ;)

the only thing i've named is my car & i've called her Carlton (aha geddit) like from fresh prince . When I'm in the car and something happens i'll find myself shouting fgs Carlton! or if she drives pretty smoothly round a bend or roundabout i'll be like 'nice carlton'.....very peculiar i know haha. As a nissan micra 2003 i think it suits her though  :D

The only things I named were my first laptop, and my car.

My current laptop doesn't have a name, but my old one was called Hal (after the computer in 2001: A Space Odyssey) because it hated me :P I had the computer for almost 4 years and in that time it had 2 total hard drive crashes that corrupted all my data (this was in uni so it ended up deleting my whole thesis project) and the lid broke once so I couldn't close it. I've had my current one for years now, ever since the fourth time Hal sabotaged my data, but I never did name it.

My car is named Amira, the only reason for which is because of the letters on the number plate, and that was the only name I could think of that included those letters. Clever, I know. :P It's funny because Amira is an Arabic name meaning Princess, but my car is sort of old and dust colored and has been through a lot what with me living in it out in the middle of the desert.

My car, a VW Beetle, is named Zippy because it was more fast and fun than my previous car, which was a minivan.

I currently have two puppies named Kylo Ren and Chewie, because, well ... because it was fun to name them after Star Wars characters. And because hubby didn't like daughter's suggestion of Sherlock and Holmes.

I nicknamed my first Dell laptop "Crapspiron" because of its performance. After that, I named my old PC desktop Darth Vader.

I know it's not a device (but it may as well be), I named my daily bag TARDIS because of its ability to somehow hold 4 bottles of wine and still had room to fit my smartphone and miscellaneous things.

My new Macbook Pro is named Sabrina Summer. ok still fangirl me. It's for Sabrina Carpenter and 5SOS. I'm such music trash.

This isn't a device, but I named my room Hurricane Paper. It's always a mess, and I always have books, school books and notebooks lying around.
