VaguelyCreativeName Posted March 3, 2019 Posted March 3, 2019 This is where I'll be posting my Writing Prompt drabbles - which I'll hopefully get to at least somewhat regularly Off we go! Prompt #9: Describe a room using every sense except sight. Quote The radio is playing as you enter, only softly so as not to disturb your neighbours, but the fast, upbeat song poses a stark contrast to the quiet around you. Occasional cars rush by in unsteady waves, but everything else suggests you are the only one awake for miles. The ceramic tiles are cold beneath your bare feet and you can feel the gaps pressing against your toes as you walk, a faint metallic ring in your ears on lifting the kettle. It’s lighter than you would have hoped; the absence of hot, sloshing liquid disappointingly obvious in its silence. Garlic and thyme pass by, still clinging to the air from when you reheated yesterday’s dinner hours before, eliciting memories of the sweetness of carrots and tomatoes, the savouriness of lentils and feta cheese as you nick another spoonful. The last, pitiful dregs of tea have long since gone cold and lost most of their flavour but leave you with flowery suggestions, nonetheless. You turn off both radio and light and leave the empty kitchen. (175 words)
magemadi Posted March 3, 2019 Posted March 3, 2019 Hi Julia!! Um so......this is like, so good?? I can almost smell the aromas you've described and hear the cars zooming by. Great job with your first prompt! I can't wait to see what you come up with for others in the future!
VaguelyCreativeName Posted April 2, 2019 Author Posted April 2, 2019 Prompt #12: Pick one of your happiest memories and write a drabble based on it. So, it turns out I wrote two short drabbles for this, because I’m extra and couldn’t decide between stand-out exhilarated and every-day content, and I'm simultaneously a 22-year-old child and grandmother (I also can't seem to stop writing about myself in second person?) a) Quote You’ve got a long, stressful day ahead of you, but you couldn’t be more excited. Admittedly, your stomach’s tied itself into a double knot with nerves, but you push down the feelings of worry (and regret?) as you wave good-bye to your parents and brothers. They’ll stay on that side of security while you press on ahead. You’ve got a new friend by your side, and you’re ready to face this next big adventure together. Recovered from the tears of farewell, you’re both sporting the biggest, cheesiest grins as you board your flight. It’ll be another fourteen hours before you’re anywhere that isn’t a plane or an airport, but they’ll fly by along with you, and you know you’ll be a world away once you land, out of your comfort zone, thrown head-first into a sea of unknown. You’re ready to swim. (142 words) b) Quote You’re in your kitchen, looking out into the garden while you wait for your tea to cool down. There’s a woodpecker, and you wonder if it’s the same one you saw a couple of weeks ago. You’ve never seen more than one at a time, so it’s not implausible. The thought makes you smile, to have the red-and-green bird building his life in your back garden. You cradle your favourite mug in your hands, the one your mum got for you. The tea’s still too hot to drink, but the porcelain warms up your fingers as you blow on it, creating tiny ripples on its surface. There’s a Bowie song playing on the radio, and you start twirling around – careful not to spill your drink – because nobody’s watching, and you want to. (132 words)
