mydearfoxy Posted June 15, 2019 Posted June 15, 2019 Welcome! Thanks for checking out my beta thread! I have some spare time on my hands now, so it's time for a new thread! This beta thread offers two options: Editing Editing is fixing errors in spelling, punctuation, grammar, and conventions. If you need help with grammar or you want someone to find typos, you are looking for editing. If you select this option, I will not provide any other feedback. My turn-around time for editing is one week. Revision Revision is about improving the quality of writing by looking at word choice, pacing, structure, character, and so on. If I happen to catch typos or other little mistakes, I'll let you know, but I won’t be specifically looking for them. My turn around time for revision is ten days. You need to select one of these options when you post your request. My strengths: - I have a college degree in creative writing, so I have a lot of experience with giving and receiving feedback on fiction - I also have a pretty thorough knowledge of grammar in (American) English - Dialogue. I don't know if I'm good at writing it, but it comes easily for me and I enjoy revising it. - Description. I love writing description and will tell you if it reads clearly, smoothly, and with impact. - Characters and interactions between them - I think I do this pretty well? (Guys, writing these strengths lists is really hard!) My weaknesses: - I may need a little more time than I'd like to get something beta-ed, particularly if I am traveling. If I ever take longer than I said I would, feel free to prod me - I'm not a "fuffy" beta reader. If you ask me for feedback, I'm going to be honest. I will always aim to be constructive and to speak kindly, but if you only want cheerleading (which is super legit and something we all need!) this is not the thread for you at the moment. - I am American, so I cannot Brit-pick. - I am not great at writing humor Fandoms: I am open to reading any fandom and original fiction as well. However, if you want someone with insight into the fandom, a list of fandoms I'm familiar with is in the spoiler tag. Spoiler Very familiar Harry Potter (of course) Avatar the Last Airbender The Tortall books Black Sails The Lunar Chronicles Sense8 The Books of Bayern Cormoran Strike Simon Vs. (Love Simon) Justice League (the cartoon) maaaaaaany broadway musicals (including Hamilton and Dear Evan Hansen) Psych Familiar enough Buffy the Vampire Slayer Brooklyn 99 Six of Crows The Good Place The Hunger Games A Series of Unfortunate Events Friends Sherlock How I Met Your Mother Firefly Battlestar Galactica X-men Game of Thrones Favorites F/F romance Stylistically interesting fiction Stories focused on mental health* Stories about queer issues Stories about friendship Even if it isn't on this list, I'm happy to read your story as long as it doesn't fall under any of my "Don't Read" criteria *see next section for the exception to this What I Don't Read Please do not ask me to beta a story featuring the following: Incest Child/Adult relationships Teacher/Student relationships, regardless of age Sexy Snape. (I'm sorry. I just can't.) Crossovers. (Other AUs are fine.) While I do enjoy stories about mental health, if I am having a particularly bad time with my own mental health and the story features intense depression or suicide, I may need to put beta-ing it on pause until it feels safe for me to read it. While I do not foresee this, I reserve the right not to beta any story that makes me uncomfortable for any reason. Rules: - Three slots open at a time, one chapter each. - You must have a completed draft of the chapter you'd like beta-ed when you post your request. - Please go ahead and DM me the link to your story when you post your request! - The more specific you are in the Areas of Concern, the better my critique will be. - I prefer works shared with me on Google Drive. That said, I'm open to alternatives if Drive doesn't work for you. - Please note the number of available slots first before you post! Please use this form to make your request: Quote Story Name: (including link if it's already posted) Type of Beta: (Editing or Revision) Fandom: Length: Warnings and Advisory: Genres: General Summary: Areas of Concern: Slots: 1. open 2. open 3. open Remember to message me with your draft right away!

Type of Beta: (Editing or Revision) any and all Fandom: HP Length: 4000 words (one shot) Warnings and Advisory: Derogatory Language, mentions of sex Genres: General, Angst, Romance General Summary: Bill Weasley hasn’t been in the same room as Nymphadora Tonks in 7 years, not since their very public and very horrible break up in his 7th year. Now they are forced by Dumbledore to get Sirius Black out of the country to keep him from being used as a tool against The Boy Who Lived after his near death experience in the department of mysteries. Now stuck in a magically enhance muggle contraption with each other for the next week of travel, will they survive the tension? Areas of Concern: grammar and flow of the story
mydearfoxy Posted June 28, 2019 Author Posted June 28, 2019 @Lacey Black absolutely, can’t wait to read it! Go ahead and DM me the link
Guest pookha Posted July 16, 2019 Posted July 16, 2019 Story Name: Growing Up Lovegood-Potter (GULP) (M) Type of Beta: Revision Fandom: Harry Potter Length: 2637 (for Chapter 2) Warnings and Advisory: Consent Issues (Mild/Moderate), Derogatory Language, Sexual Content, Substance Abuse, Violence Genres: Angst, AU, Drama, Romance General Summary: "Harry's had a hard time since Luna left him for Rolf, but he seems to be getting better. Lily Lovegood-Potter and her twin Pandora Ginevra Lovegood-Potter start at Hogwarts and discover Quidditch. All three learn about themselves. " It will have a lot of Quidditch in it, a romance between Lily Luna Lovegood-Potter and an OFC. Areas of Concern: For Chapter 2, mostly concerned with the Sorting Ceremony and the questions the hat is asking Pandora Lovegood-Potter Turnaround time is no worry for me, 10 days to 2 weeks is totally fine. None of the warnings apply to this chapter. Because of the way I'm writing it, I would be giving you access to the entire Google Doc, but am only asking for one chapter at a time. This means that the other chapters/outline would be visible to you. If this bothers you, I can copy/paste it into a separate chapter each time and create a Google Doc for it.

I'm so happy to see your request Unfortunately, I'm about to be out of the county with only my phone for 3 weeks. I don't think I'll have time to do a real beta job before I leave, but I'd be happy to pick it up when I get back if you truly don't mind a long wait. Otherwise, I'll totally understand if you'd prefer to withdraw this request and find someone who is available. Oh, and the whole google doc is fine. If you could include the page number for the chapter in question next time, that would be handy, but it isn't important. (I'm sure I'll find chapter 2 quickly anyway) On a related note - brief hiatus from beta-ing for the next 3 weeks due to travel. You can request (until the slots are full) but I won't be doing anything with this at all until August. Slot 1: Ch 2 Growing Up Lovegood-Potter (GULP) (M) by pookha Slot 2: open Slot 3: open ON HIATUS UNTIL AUGUST 4
Guest pookha Posted July 17, 2019 Posted July 17, 2019 I do not mind a long wait, as I've been writing on it for about a year anyway....It gives me time to work on chapter 6..5 and 4.5 (added chapters when I realized the outline wasn't enough).
Shadowkat678 Posted August 8, 2019 Posted August 8, 2019 Story Name: Founders Four: Pillars of the Ages Chapter Three Type of Beta: Revision Fandom: Harry Potter Length: 2829 Warnings and Advisory: Violence Genres: general, Action/Adventure General Summary: History speaks to us of four friends, a school they together founded, and a division that still echoes through the stone halls of Hogwarts today. Yet, that great castle was never truly the beginning, and most certainly wasn't the end. Maybe, it's time to find out what the history books didn't tell you. Areas of Concern: Dialogue and pacing
mydearfoxy Posted August 11, 2019 Author Posted August 11, 2019 I’m out of town right now (yes, again :P) but hope to get to both requests soon. @Shadowkat678 I look forward to reading your story! As per the top post, please go ahead and message me with the link. Thanks!
Shadowkat678 Posted August 24, 2019 Posted August 24, 2019 Story Name: Job Gone Wrong Type of Beta: Revision Fandom: Original Fiction Length: 1310 Warnings and Advisory: None Genres: general General Summary: The client told them it’d be easy. Right in and right out with the loot. Then they could retire. Maybe settle down together. Adopt a kid or two and get out of that small Kentucky hell hole. Next thing they knew there was a guy’s plastic wrapped corpse hidden in the bed of their F-150. Areas of Concern: There's a spot at the end that I can't seem to smooth out, and I'd love a second look at the full piece as well as any feedback on that particular area.

muiguffe Posted August 26, 2019 Posted August 26, 2019 Hi! I’d like to occupy one of your slots if that’s ok This will be my first contribution to the archive, so I’m anxious to see what you think before I go public I have to say that it is not a traditional fanfic story, but I’m hoping that it falls within what you’d call “stylistically interesting” The idea is based on the Escape Room concept (and how that had been applied to books) so the reader will have to solve a puzzle in each chapter in order to advance to the next. Of course there are hints for each chapter (and the solution is revealed eventually) plus right now the chapters are still ordered in the right order to facilitate beta reading. I plan to upload this as a drabble series with short 100-500 word chapters (and a graphic for each that is part of the story), I can re-apply for your slots chapter by chapter if you prefer, but the whole thing is just around 5k words. I have the story in google drive, I’ll DM you the link. Thank you so much in advance! And I wanted to add that I’m not in a hurry, this is planned as a Christmas gift for a friend, so I really do have time for major modifications, you are more than welcome to tell me if something does not work at all. Story Name: Caesar’s Cave Type of Beta: Revision Fandom: HP Length: 5500 words Warnings and Advisory: none Generes: Mystery General summary: This is an adventure revolting around the Philosopher’s Stone, Transylvanian magic and puzzles that you have to solve along the way. Unlike in traditional stories, here you are the protagonist, and you need to find your way in the labyrinth of randomly ordered chapters in order to unfold the mystery. Break the curses, get the codes and follow through the adventure with as many hints as you want / need. Areas of concern: I’m mostly concerned with how well the story reads and if this format is enjoyable / understandable. Another major concern is style, since I’m not native English, I know that my choice of words is far from perfect
mydearfoxy Posted September 7, 2019 Author Posted September 7, 2019 Just a heads up to my requesters, @Shadowkat678 @CheekyTorah-Lex @muiguffe This past two weeks was very busy for me bcs I"m a teacher and the school year just started, but I should be done with travel and have a more solid routine for the next few months at least.
