Week 2: Advertise!

Your campaign has been launched, so now it’s time to spread the word! This week’s events consist of two major tasks: a scavenger hunt and a ‘social media’ campaign.

For the scavenger hunt, there are 12 cards (example below) hidden across the forums and archives. The cards are only in stories updated after (and including) June 1 2018, but anywhere on the forums is fair game. Each of these cards features a prompt - and you’ll want to hold onto those. ? You’ll need to claim three - however, points will be awarded for finding prompt cards beyond just those.

How to claim a prompt:

  • Post the prompt you’ve found in a thread in your common room specifically dedicated to the scavenger hunt. Tag @down-in-flames, @grumpy cat, and @something wicked in the post.
  • A campaign specialist will confirm whether of not you’ve successfully claimed that prompt. The same card cannot be claimed by more than one House - if you attempt to claim a prompt that has already been claimed by another House, you’ll receive points for finding the card, but it won’t count as one of your three prompt claims. In addition, there will be bonus points awarded to the first House to find all twelve cards, so keep searching even after you’ve found your three.

The other portion of this week’s activities involves getting the word out! Now that your campaign exists, you need to show the wizarding populace why they should vote for your House’s candidate. And how will you accomplish that? ADVERTISING.

Thanks to your incredibly successful campaign launches, you’ve each already managed to fundraise 50 Galleons - now, it’s time to reinvest that money into promoting your candidate! There are four main types of advertisements available for purchase - tweets, picspams, audio segments, and video segments. Ad slots can be purchased for the following prices:

  • Tweet: 1 Galleon
  • Picspam: 8 Galleons
  • 30-second audio segment: 4 Galleons
  • 1-minute audio segment: 7 Galleons
  • 30-second video segment: 6 Galleons
  • 1-minute video segment: 10 Galleons

To maximise your ads’ effectiveness (and your points for this week), you’ll want to spend that full 50 Galleon budget - without going over. Points will be awarded for the best ads in each of the four categories, so there’s incentive to diversify your advertising mediums. However, you’re not  required to make all four ad types either - you’ll still receive full points (and be eligible for quality points judging in the types your House did make) even if you choose not to do all four ad types.

Deliverables for Week 2 (due by 27 June at 11:59 PM EST):

  • Signature sets
    • Post these in your ‘House Cup Campaign Deliverables’ thread. Tag @down-in-flames, @grumpy cat, and @something wicked for visibility.
    • Also, everyone participating in the finale should change their sig sets to these for the duration of the event.
  • Scavenger hunt prompts
    • Claim cards as explained above.
    • For any cards you find after the three you claim, post a list of the additional found prompts. Tag as usual.
  • Social media campaign
    • Despite the name of this section, no one on your campaign team is required to post anything on social media. You’re welcome to share anything you create on your own accounts, but no points are awarded based on that.
    • Create one post in your ‘House Cup Campaign Deliverables’ thread containing all of the advertisements you’d like to purchase slots for - if you’ve hosted your components on an external site (for example, uploading an audio segment to Soundcloud), a link is fine. Tag @down-in-flames, @grumpy cat, and @something wicked - we’ll take your advertisements and get them running all over the wizarding world! (Because yes, they’ve all got social media now.)
  • You will be scored for completion of signature sets, claiming scavenger hunt cards (along with a bonus for finding all 12), and completing the social media campaign. There will be additional quality points awarded for each of the advertisement types. Between all of those things, you can earn up to 1710 points this week.

Sorry to be dense, but we have some confusion over the points situation for the media campaigns. It seems to read that points will be given for each form of media we complete. Is that accurate? If so, does that mean someone completing all forms of media is likely to score higher than a house who completes only two?

Thank you for your time explaining this further.

I've mentioned this in The Campaign Trail thread but I'll post it here so it's clear.

As we've had a few questions about different methods of advertising we'd quickly like to make sure everyone is on the same page.

While it is encouraged to make a range of advertisements there is no requirement to do so. So long as each house spends the fifty Galleons it can be done in whichever way that specific house would prefer. This could be reached by making a mix of all four, a mix of two or by going all out and writing fifty tweets (though… as one of the people who’ll be posting them on twitter I would maybe suggest not doing this ?).

If there are any questions please remember to tag myself, @down-in-flames and @grumpy cat in the post and we’ll be sure to answer as soon as possible.

Extra points will be given to the highest scoring piece of advertisement in each section (tweet, picspam, audio and video). For example, in order to be in the running for the extra points in audio an audio clip would need to be submitted. However there is no requirement to do all of these, it's up to each house what method(s) of advertising they would like to use.

Popping up again with a quick reminder: For those houses recording video entries please stay aware of the site guidelines on personal photographs and make sure that any members personally appearing in the clips are over eighteen (18) years old.

hi popping in with one SUPER IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT and one, uhhh, not so important one. ?

1. thanks to some tricky work by your campaign managers in staving off the hoards of advertisers waiting to publish your content for just a few days longer, the deadline for the ADVERTISING + SOCIAL MEDIA CAMPAIGN portion of this week's tasks has been pushed to SUNDAY, JUNE 30 at 11:59 pm est. the deadlines for the other parts of this week - the signature set and the scavenger hunt - will remain the same as stated above.

2. for an example of a video ad (thanks to a dream i had last night and couldn't stop thinking about all day today), +enjoy?

I think I read that we need our faceclaims in our sig sets? Is that right? Can we omit them, and if so, will that hurt our chances of points?

@grumpy cat @down-in-flames @something wicked

ideally, we would like to see both the faceclaim and the slogan, but it's not necessary and it won't hurt your chances of getting points for the sig set.

I understand the need for a clean campaign, but can we smear ex PMs (ie Fudge etc.)

since there still seems be a little bit of confusion regarding the video ad, i wanted to clarify that you don't have to film yourselves, you may use existing footage of your faceclaims (here+(m because it's youtube) is an example video)
