Guest Rumpelstiltskin Posted September 13, 2019 Posted September 13, 2019 Guess That Scientist! Thursday, September 12th - Thursday, September 19th (11:59 PM GMT) Your Prefects are masterful Scientists, especially when it comes to the science of sneaking about laboratories unnoticed! You probably know this-or-that about your science-y Prefects, but this experiment will cause you to research a little deeper into the mind of your Prefects. This isn't about collecting facts (as previous experiments have already been run on the study), but finding the internal and possibly lesser-known elements on what makes each Prefect. You'll have to run two experiments to determine the identity of the following Scientists: @something wicked @belgian quaffle @MalfoysAngel @MadiMalfoy @Rumpelstiltskin @crestwood Guesses will be made via PM. The Prefects will set up PMs for each House. Please comment below if you want to be added to your House's Guessing PM! You may make as many guesses for pairs as you'd like. Experiment #1 Extract of Prefect Specifications: We have prepared DNA samples of each of the above Scientists on slides in order to more accurately identify meddling Prefects. Directions: Observe the following samples and try to determine the Scientist that each of the samples belong to. Samples (as prepped by @something wicked : 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Completion of all six (6) pairs will be worth a total of 50 points. Experiment #2 Writing Styles - a Scientific Study Specifications: We have prepared writing samples of each of the above Scientists on the invention of the Developing Solution. Directions: Observe the following samples and try to determine the Scientist that each of the samples belong to. Samples: 1. It began with a lightning storm, as these things do. It struck me while dabbling with the ingredients for a Memory Potion -- an idea (and also the lightning)! Once I came to, I noticed what had been the beginning of my potion had spilled over a photograph on my table. Only, the photo had formed a peculiar reaction to one of the ingredients. Trial and error led me to discover that the Jaberknoll feathers were causing the photographs to glitch, in a sense. To smooth the glitch, I bathed it afterward in Utricularia root in a dark room to avoid over-saturation. To my delight, I beheld a short movement! Though it wasn't smooth. I attempted again, this the Jaberknoll feather solution was diluted, and cut with Salamander blood, which strengthened the image. From there, treated with the Utricularia dark bath, the photos moved, as if the memory itself had been stopped and stored within, waiting to be set free, if only with a little help. 2. Three years, seven months, and eighteen days. That’s how long it took to perfect this muggle potion adaptation. Poking the soaking piece of parchment with the tip of my wand, I muttered the incantation a third time. Silver flashed over the parchment. I removed it from the solution, letting it drip dry in the air, holding my breath. The smiling child in the photograph grinned wider and waved a hand at me. I waved back at the child. The addition of the powdered antimony had solved the freezing issue of previous developing solutions. With that fixed, it was perfect and ready for market. 3. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times; actually it was bedtime when I went to make myself a cup of tea. All the materials and byproducts of that day’s experiments were still sitting on my table, the photos I’d gotten too frustrated with still sitting in yet another solution that had failed in changing its colors. I reached up for my coziest mug only to lose my balance on my way down and bump the table. The crash behind me caught my attention and I turned to see two bottles had fallen into the solution, The pearl powder mixed with the bubotuber pus and suddenly the photo was moving! I peered at it intently, fascinated by the subjects smiling and waving. It may not have been what I set out to do, but if you can’t support your theory, then switch your goals. 4. My wife and I had always known that there was something special about our daughter. Being of our blood, how could there not be? She’d spend weeks locked in her chambers, the distant pops of small explosions filling our walls with intrigue. We trusted her to conduct her experiments in relative safety; she was nearly a woman after all. The day she came bounding into the dining room, waving a photograph of a tree whose branches swayed in the wind, it was clear that she truly was her mother’s daughter. And, to think, she only ever had the thought because she hated to stand for paintings. 5. The laboratory was a state. The lingering smell of congealed or separated substances, abandoned earlier attempts, hung in the air. Warped caldrons containing ghastly concoctions would have to be thrown out, or repaired with a swift spell, before anyone noticed the multiple casualties of my latest experiment. Everyone laughed when I had announced, a morning not so long ago, that I had a new idea. My new ideas never went very well. Until now! I couldn’t keep the smug smile off my face as I looked at it again. Submerged in the silvery potion, just below the surface, a pair of bright smiles beamed up at me. Hands waved, wind seemed to blow through the couple’s hair, just as it had on the day this still was taken. It was perfect. I scribbled a final amendment to the lengthy recipe I had created, asphodel petals had made all the difference in the end. If only I had worked that out three cauldrons earlier. 6. You have a beautiful family. Devan has heard those words so many times they serve only as a reminder of what he has lost since the war. All he has left of his wife and children are the pictures his muggle wife took on their last holiday at the beach. He longs to capture the personalities of his children in the photographs and recalls the moving portraits that lined the halls during his school days. He knows that with his skills in potion making that there must be a way to develop a potion that will allow those pictures to move similar to the muggle films his wife insisted he see on date night. He knows he can replicate it if given the chance, so he goes down to the basement, lights a fire under his cauldron and with quill and parchment nearby, gets to work. Completion of all six (6) pairs will earn a total of 50 points. Best of luck with your experiments! You have until Thursday, September 19th (11:59 PM GMT) to complete your two experiments!
