jnorman79 Posted January 12, 2020 Posted January 12, 2020 Thanks for letting me into this group. I am writing a book about the Potter saga, and including a chapter on fan fiction. I’d like to hear from those of you who made up your own stories about the Potter characters. I’d like to talk about how you first got into it, how your stories came together, what it was like putting your own spin on this wonderful creation. Please respond if you’d be nice enough to help! Thanks so much!
Ineke Posted January 16, 2020 Posted January 16, 2020 Hi @jnorman79! I just moved your topic here as this makes more sense, considering you're asking for help with your story! I want to wish you the best of luck with it
crowsb4bros Posted January 20, 2020 Posted January 20, 2020 I’d like to talk about how you first got into it My first introduction to fanfiction came from an ancient quiz site called quizilla (the true precursor of buzzfeed imo). I read a Harry Potter/OC story and then read everything I could get my hands on. I moved on to other sites because quizilla allowed for plagiarism and eventually found this community! how your stories came together Most of my stories are in my gdoc still, but my stories usually start from a vague idea of either a character or a setting until I come up with a prompt I like. I sit down and outline the key things I want to include in each chapter and then fill in the details as I go. I go back and add continuity details and easter eggs as I edit. what it was like putting your own spin on this wonderful creation It's really intimidating for me to capture the more defined characters (like the Golden Trio) so I tend to stick to minor characters. They'll never be out of character if they aren't already well explored!
Guest Noelle Zingarella Posted January 21, 2020 Posted January 21, 2020 I’d like to talk about how you first got into it I started re-reading the HP books to my kids in December of 2018, and remembered how wonderful they were. It was almost like reading them for the first time. While we were reading them, I started asking "what if" about some of the characters, and for fun, started writing what would become my first HP fanfics. Then I did a google search to find out if anybody else did this--and happily fell down the rabbit hole that is fanfction. It was like discovering a whole new world. how your stories came together Ideas come to me as scenarios and major plot points. If I think I'll get to something soon, I don't usually take notes about it; otherwise I have a notebook and a string of googledocs with (sometimes cryptic) notes to keep track of everything. If it's a longer story, I will outline; for shorter ones I don't always do that. I like to write the first draft as fast as I can, then I print it out, and rewrite the whole thing, using the first draft as a template. Sometimes I will just edit and post rather than rewrite, but the story is always much better if I have the time to rewrite before editing. what it was like putting your own spin on this wonderful creation It is sooo much fun!! I love getting to explore new sides of characters; write missing moments; flesh out minor characters; answer my 'what if' questions. It's also fun to try to fit a narrative around canon. And it's just such a fun world to play in.
