northbound24 Posted March 24, 2020 Posted March 24, 2020 Here in the valley of the squibs, Lies a secret the serpent hides. One the raven hopes no soul finds, while the lion roars as the eagle soars. The tod and brock seek home below as darkness beckons, All hope takes flight as evil is reckoned Andrew Teague, 11th December 1859 Here is my novel nest for Camp NaNo this year, I have two projects on the go which fall under the umbrella title of ‘The Life & Times of Eddie Teague’, my alternate universe canon of the Harry Potter series. The above poem is an in-universe piece of writing relating to the overarching mythology of the series and there may be more of that style of writing coming up as I found it interesting to write. So let me introduce my projects: THE INSPECTOR TEAGUE LETTERS: THE CHURCH LANE MURDER. My entry for the Epistolary Challenge which currently stands at six chapters as of this year, on the archives (Yay, go me!). The basic story is that Godric’s Hollow’s vicar, the grandly named Marius Talbot is murdered in the summer of 1990 and the investigation gets rather complex as wizards are involved. CORE CAST Detective Inspector John ‘Jack’ Teague- The senior police officer in charge of the inquiry, a wizard himself, meaning he has to deal with both the muggle and wizarding sides of the law. Has an enmity with Dolores Umbridge stretching back to their school days at Hogwarts. The Reverend Marius Talbot- The murdered rector of St Jerome’s Church in Godric’s Hollow, the only holy man in the Squib’s Valley area. The only real clues to his murder are the unidentified blood found on the sword used to behead him and a years long correpondence with Severus Snape. Dolores Umbridge- The universally disliked junior undersecretary to newly elected Minister for Magic Cornelius Oswald Fudge. Even former Death Eaters keep their distance from her. Severus Snape- The prime suspect in Talbot’s murder, deflected from the Death Eaters under the protection of Albus Dumbledore. However certain events concerning dead Death Eater Evan Rosier raise questions…. Detective Sergeant Anne Drinkwater- Jack’s police partner, a recent transfer from Cinderford in the Forest of Dean and still unsure she fits in with the even more tight-knit communities of Squib’s Valley. Detective Sergeant Alec Granger- When things take a turn for the worse, Chief Constable Linklater calls in a favour from Oxford police and brings in Alec. Ten years away from retirement Alec is burned out and just wants to spend time with his wife and daughter. PROJECT 2: UNTITLED ‘TROPE STEW CHALLENGE’ ENTRY This story is for @tatapb’s ‘Trope Stew’ Challenge and as I said in the challenge’s thread: I haven't done a proper romance story before so I'll keep: fake dating - it's the kinda thing Eddie Teague would get mixed up in. Well when not fighting dark wizards what's the worst that could happen - Eddie literally has this said to him and seen the carnage that ensues cannot tell a lie - Some idiots shouldn't read potion books.....seriously head student dorm - Sweet Rowena's Ghost! It actually exists....damn I've just lost ten quid star-crossed lovers- The Teague clan wrote the book, sold the movie rights and wrote the musical on this trope (well...Two members did) This is going to be interesting
Darling_take_off_the_mask Posted March 26, 2020 Posted March 26, 2020 I adore Inspector Jack Teague and am so excited for more Letters! And that trope stew looks promising! I can't make heads or tails of mine, and for some reason I look at everyone else's and go, "Oh, yeah, that'll work!"

I'm glad you adore him @RonsGirlFriday, I'll be honest and say that I don't really know where Letters is going to end up ending wise. In terms of Jack's character he was always a police officer because it informed a lot about who Eddie Teague himself is, intelligent and able to put clues together. Jack is Eddie's father so I thought: Lets see a story about his profession and how that impacts the stories that Eddie gets involved in. In terms of the 'Trope Stew' it'll work but how? I'll get it lead me.
Guest Rumpelstiltskin Posted March 26, 2020 Posted March 26, 2020 You know, I really should probably check out the Eddie Teague verse more than just what I've seen with Jack in the Church Lane Murder. Speaking of, I'm totally excited for it to be a part of your Camp Project! Your tropes for the Trope Stew Challenge look promising! Good luck and have fun! O/

Hey @grumpy cat! I've got one or two ideas for the Trope challenge. I might end up starting Eddie Teague's story proper in the middle, a bit like the original Star Wars trilogy and work backwards from there.

Obviously they're part of the universe you're described, but I'm wondering if you plan to bake them in a lot to the projects of if they're intended more as something that runs alongside or even separate from the story. Good luck, fellow NaNite!

Good luck, fellow NaNite! Hi @TidalDragon! The ninth chapter of The Church Lane Murder is now up for reading, what do you enjoy about it? The poems will be shown in the projects and separate as well as they will be works in their own right.
northbound24 Posted March 29, 2020 Author Posted March 29, 2020 Here's a noodle incident from DI Jack Teague's Hogwarts days: "Gang? You save Bilius Prewett from a cursed turnip and suddenly you're in a gang"
northbound24 Posted April 1, 2020 Author Posted April 1, 2020 Being working on the plot outline and core cast of my trope stew entry and here's the core cast: MAIN CAST “THE FAMOUS FIVE” Dubbed as such by Jack’s dad Brian, this motley bunch are growing up in the shadow of Tom Riddle’s return to Britain and the creation of the Death Eaters. John Percival “Jack” Teague- Chain smoking seventh year Ravenclaw, has his eyes on joining the police force after graduation from Hogwarts. Frank “Frankie” Longbottom- The son of the formidable Augusta Longbottom (nee Dearborn) and Godfrey Longbottom. Hogwarts’ new head boy and Gryffindor House’s resident herbology expert. Amelia Susan “Mel” Bones- The sister of Edgar “Crossbones” Bones, Hufflepuff prefect and Junior British Duelling Champion. Very much ‘one of the boys’ Octavius “Oggy” Weasley- Self proclaimed ‘blood traitor’ and proud of it, the middle brother of the Weasley Boys. And the Five’s trickster. Benjamin Alan “Benjy” Fenwick- A half-blood Slytherin from Whitechapel, London. The son of a middle-level gangster and a ‘mildly ambitious’ member of the Rosier family.

Guest Noelle Zingarella Posted April 21, 2020 Posted April 21, 2020 Hi Dave! You're kiilling it with his NaNo! What have you found is harder and/or easier about writing a long form story in the epistolary style; versus writing it in a more conventional style?
