Predictable Chaos Posted March 31, 2020 Posted March 31, 2020 Since I'm not supposed to leave my house, I might actually have time for Camp Nano! I'm focusing on two multi-chapter fics. UNDEFINED LOYALTIES I really need to get back into this. I haven't touched it in over a month. (It's not my fault. I'm blaming people like @Noelle Zingarella and @MadiMalfoy for creating challenges that I couldn't pass up.) Anyways, Katarina will be going back to Annecy hoping it will help her retrieve her lost memorie. She'll meet some new people and remeet some people she wished she hadn't met the first time and, of course, she'll be entering into Grindelwald's domain but having no idea why that's so important. FALLING IN LOVE FROM SIX FEET AWAY This is my first attempt at a modern-AU. Thanks to ANOTHER challenge that I couldn't pass up. (Shhh! I haven't told @down-in-flames that I'm writing something for her challenge.) It's going to be a Neville/Hannah romance but it's taking place real time aka in the middle of the COVID 19 pandemic. Various events about the virus will surround the romance. Some will be funny (like running out of toilet paper) and others definitely not. I'm not sure exactly how much the disease is going to actually impact the characters because it is so emotionally raw for the world right now. At the moment, I'm keeping it light and we'll see what reactions are. Total Word Count: 1,150.
Bunbury Posted April 9, 2020 Posted April 9, 2020 barbara! here for some nano encouragement first of all, i just checked out the summary of loyalties undefined and it looks thrilling! i can already tell i'm gonna love it, what with all the espionage, war, and (of course) magic. what is it that draws you to the spy genre, and can you recommend any favourite spy novels or movies? (among my favourites are the spy who came in from the cold (among novels) and north by northwest (among movies) ) the relationship between dumbledore and grindlewald has always been an especially intriguing one for me -- what have you found most exciting or surprising about writing their dynamic? second, i totally flipped when i saw the premise of "falling in love from six feet away"! i recently started a coronavirus romance (which i'm currently calling "distance") about the exact same thing (though on reflection i guess it's not that surprising, this is our daily reality, unfortunately). i've really enjoyed brainstorming dates that can be conduced during a lockdown (can't go to the bar, can't go. . .anywhere) at a distance of six feet (can't use physical means to communicate budding relationship). what are you most enjoying about writing a romance with these unusual logistical restriction? have you found it cathartic to work on a lighthearted coronavirus-themed story in these dark times?

I have to admit. I've only made it to Day 2 (of when the virus makes it to their city.) I also created a mythical city so I don't have to follow any given timeline (although I'll generally follow the US.) The two live next door to each other and they fall in love while sitting on their respective balconies (which are 6 feet apart.) She's a nurse so I can pull some ideas from that end. My biggest concerns are 1)keeping the dialogue fresh and 2)not making it too dark (which I tend to do. I'm better at dark then fluff.) I'd love to see yours. Let me know when it's ready to be read!
Guest Noelle Zingarella Posted April 23, 2020 Posted April 23, 2020 Hi Barbara!! How's your NaNo going? You know I love Loyaties Undefined! What's it like writing a character with basically magical amnesia? The Six Feet Apart story sounds like it has a lot of potential for all sorts of feels. You mention that one of the lovers is a nurse--what does the other lover do?
beyond the rain Posted April 24, 2020 Posted April 24, 2020 Hey! I love the idea of six feet apart, very relevant and real!! I have to ask, what made you choose neville and hannah as the pairing for this set up? Also, there's nothing wrong with a bit of angst! I find myself having the opposite problem, I keep finding humour in even the darkest plot points of my fic. Which isn't great, ha! I hope you keep writing, and that you hit your nano goals!!

(Working from home-it seems I have lots of time and no time-at the same time.) Kate doesn't realize that she has amnesia at the moment. Her memories were replaced with every day memories because they didn't want Grindelwald's people to realize something amiss. It's when she gets her memories back that it's going to be interesting. Neville is a lawyer in a firm that specializing in animal abuse, so rather atypical for a law firm. I'm basing of the boyfriend of one of my college roommates. As he said, "It's rather challenging especially when none of your clients can talk." I'm not sure how integral his job will be to the story, but Hannah's definitely will be. Both characters are going to be a bit unsure and shy about relationships so Neville and Hannah seemed a better fit, personality wise than some of the other HP ships.
