beyond the rain Posted July 2, 2020 Posted July 2, 2020 Hello! I’m bex. I’ve been writing on and off since 2008! I can actually remember the very first short story that I wrote, because it was read out in a school assembly and I was gutted because I was sick the day it got read. I spent the next day interviewing my friends, asking what they liked and disliked about my piece I find myself writing when I have something to say, but can’t really articulate it myself. Thankfully there are all these terrible characters who can say it for me. Current Works: Quote Worse Ways to Live | one-shot There is beauty in the mundane. Quote Raising Helena | novel In a family full of prodigies, be the normal one. In fact, you should aim to be the biggest disappointment they've ever seen. Upcoming: Waltz with Me Hermione wants to dance. Severus does not. That’s literally it, that’s the fic, I’m taking no further questions at this time. The Hebbles: I have no plot, purely because all I have in my head is pure fluff. Professor Hebble is from the Raising Helena universe. I really want to write about his husband, and how they spend their later years. His husband, Dennis, is also a muggle - which I think would be fun to explore given the statute of secrecy, society’s attitudes, how they make the relationship work etc etc. Lucy Weasley: In RH, Lucy Weasley is an unwilling fly on the wall. She sees a lot, and wishes she couldn’t. All I have is that she’s friends with moaning myrtle, if you class saying “do you ever stop crying?” three times a day, as friendship. Romilda Mars: I can’t call Romilda Mars a tragedy, because she played no part in her own demise...it was all me. However, she’s one of my favourite characters and I want to show you all why. Somehow. Maybe. Lily Potter II and Roxanne Weasley: At first, I housed Lily in Slytherin to torture Snape. That was it, I just thought it was hilarious, and that there was some irony in it. Now, I see Lily as this incredibly ambitious witch, her brothers are idiots and yet they have the map and the cloak! She’s somewhat vain, I can literally hear Ginny shouting “Lily, stop taking pictures of yourself and help set the table” Lily wants to take over the world. Roxanne is the same age, and is her unwilling partner in crime turned caretaker. If it wasn’t for Roxanne, Lily would have been expelled many, many times. Reading preferences: I don’t have many preferences when it comes to reading. There are ships and plot points that I enjoy more than others, but generally there are very few ships I won’t read. As long as there’s consent, as long as it is legal (nothing underage) - I want to see something that’s written well and explored comprehensively. That could be harry/ginny, it could be rose/mad eye (hello time travel) , it could be ron/neville. The point of fanfiction, for me at least, is to explore possibilities that the author did not. Writing preferences: My favourite characters to write are: Severus Snape Albus Dumbledore Moaning Myrtle Ron Weasley Bellatrix Lestrange Hagrid My next challenge will be to try and put them all in a fic together My favourite ships to write are: Snape x Hermione (gasp) In the past three years, I think I’ve only ever written SSHG. I’m going to list a few ships I would like to write in the future: Minerva x Poppy Ron x Padma Romilda x Pansy Cho x Oliver Favourite genres to write: Humour Angst Least favourite genre to write: Adventure Horror My aim at the minute is to only create pieces within the Raising Helena universe, but I might venture out from time to time. I would love to answer any questions you may have!
tangents Posted July 17, 2020 Posted July 17, 2020 BEX! can't believe I get the opportunity to be first in your writer's journal i feel so honored anyways, I have some questions for you I hope you like them: what was your favorite part about writing worse ways to live? I've already asked you many questions about Raising Helena, I know, so instead, I'll just ask you: what inspired you to write it? where did the mystery part come from? I know I'm still in the middle of reading it (and am liking every bit so far!) but how did Helena's voice come to you? she has a very distinct narrative to her and it's AMAZING to read, bex you said no further details on waltz with me, but I'm going to be a butt and ask for more details. just tell me: what's the background for this story?! how did the inspiration strike? I'm not going to force you to answer this question since I've already asked you four, but I NEED TO KNOW ALL ABOUT THE HEBBLES. that dynamic sounds so pure and wonderful and no wonder you love your Raising Helena verse teachers so much. this is a question I will ask you to answer: tell me about Lily Luna Potter and Roxanne Weasley's exploits, please. (and if you have time, Lucy & Myrtle heheh) I have so many more questions for you but I will leave this for now and instead go fangirl over the Raising Helena ensemble which is so great.

I always think I can write angst, or slow burns, but then I find myself caught in a losing battle with my characters and it's just .-. i give in to them a lot. They control me more than I control them. So, here I was just able to give in and write whatever I wanted, zero plot just prose and fluff and a lil bit of smut. 2. This story was just another way I could torture Snape, and another way to facilitate Helena's really loud voice. I've just written the scene that inspired this story, it's not in the queue yet - but it involves Scorpius Malfoy, Helena, and a book by Rita Skeeter. When you know you know. Then it was like, well maybe I could write a fic about Helena wanting to go to this magical university and study a course that her parents wouldn't approve of or wouldn't understand - but then that fell flat. THEN - I was just like, oh how about it's just these teens trying to navigate being teens bc high school is tough. Then I worried that wouldn't be enough....so I decided to kill off a teacher. You do what you gotta do. I've also never written mystery and I know in myself it's not a strength, so it's good practice! 3. I'm pretty sure you said it in one of your reviews, Helena's voice is kind of like mine. We definitely rant and side eye people in the same way. I think I was talking to Branwen and Kris about the next gen names. I have made it known I don't like the names, and then this voice just emerged like - oh - you don't like them? I live with them! I was nearly called Nymphadora! Grabbed my attention immediately, and I just let her talk. 4. Watching the Yule Ball clips and gifs inspired me to write this one. I just think Hermione likes dancing, and Snape obviously doesn't. I mean he doesn't like anything that doesn't involve skulking, but I digress. I also know Hermione likes to bring change and get sucked into a cause like it's nobody's business. I felt like she would petition for a yule ball comeback, she gets what she wants....but now nobody will dance with her v sad - she tries to convince snape who is not interested at all. Waltz with me takes place during the run up to the ball, and the ball itself. So do they dance??? don't they???? It's very important stuff HEBBLES - okay so Dennis is a muggle, and Calpurnius is pureblood. Cal has always loved nature, he goes to bird watching fairs - both magic and muggle. They met in the 80s or 90s during one of the muggle bird fairs. Dennis has this really demanding, boring corporate job - so during the summer and holidays, they spend all their time doing fun nature hobbies. They have a magical garden at home and a plot in a muggle community greenhouse. They also foster animals, they go to magical creature fairs, go fishing, and spend most of their time outdoors. If they're not doing outdoorsy stuff, they will be reading in their conservatory. My fave headcanon is that they wear identical looking glasses, but their prescriptions are super different, and they always have a moment of wow what happened to my eyes - oh wait - I'm wearing the wrong glasses. I think they're cute, you must agree Lily and Roxanne - Well, they're currently blackmailing Lennie and Harry as they spied on the Slytherin quidditch team. Their exploits are calculated, and all about power. They enjoy watching their brothers act stupid, but also are like - now you make me look stupid by association. Both of them work really hard to separate themselves from their immediate family. Lily will play on the fact that she's the granddaughter of Lily Evans, and use it to her advantage. People are sentimental, and she exploits it. Roxanne and Lily are about image, Roxanne is obsessed with the muggle "selfie culture" and would like to become "Instagram Famous" and then a very successful businesswoman. Or work as a civil servant in the muggle and/or magical government. The one with the most power. Lucy and Myrtle, well. I don't have much on them, because I just have like one scene sort of looping over and over whenever I think of them. I don't think Lucy has a lot of patience for Myrtle, but at the same time bc she's given her a chance - she knows she's more than what people think she is. Then again, she literally does nothing but cry and moan about being dead which really annoys Lucy. She doesn't have the patience for it. I just keep hearing "do you ever stop crying?" "Were you even listening, I've worked out that Helena Snape has a crush on my cousin and you're just - flooding the bathroom. Again. Have you thought of something more original? Or is this new?" Thank you for loving my ensemble, they love you too
