Welcome to the 2020-2021 House Cup Opener event! What's better than a little bit of friendly inter-House competition to start the school year off right?

Before we get started, a brief reminder of who your Prefects are:

:gryffindor: - @belgian quaffle
:hufflepuff: - @singmetothesun @Renacerá
:ravenclaw: - @magemadi @RonsGirlFriday @sibilant
:slytherin: - @juls @MalfoysAngel

For those of you unfamiliar with the game, Battleship is a tabletop game where two players arrange ships of various sizes on an 8 x 8 board and try to sink all of their opponents ships first. To do so, you first must successfully hit a ship, and you must continue to hit a ship until its allotted hits/points are reached. We will be doing this in a similar manner, but participants will have to work for it a bit :P

General Gameplay

  • Three rounds of play - each House will face the other three
    • Each round will last 5 days, with start/end times of 12 am GMT
      • Round 1: Ravenclaw vs Slytherin; Hufflepuff vs Gryffindor - September 6th - September 10th; rest day September 11th
      • Round 2: Slytherin vs Gryffindor; Ravenclaw vs Hufflepuff - September 12th - September 16th; rest day September 17th
      • Round 3: Hufflepuff vs Slytherin; Gryffindor vs Ravenclaw - September 18th - September 22nd
    • Each House has 6 House-specific items to hide in an 8x8 grid
    • Each House will complete a variety of tasks to find & attempt to hit the opposing House's items
    • First House to sink the other House's items wins that round

Rules

  1. Each House must submit their desired arrangement of items to the Prefects for each round at least 2 hours before gameplay starts (PM the Prefects please!)
    1. Round 1 will be needed by 10 pm GMT September 5th
    2. Round 2 needed by 10 pm GMT September 11th
    3. Round 3 needed by 10 pm GMT September 17th
  2. Make a hit attempt by posting a link to a completed task and a position on the board, i.e.   magemadi - Nonfiction Book Recommendation - B4
  3. Each hit attempt must be verified by a Prefect; they will tell you if you've hit an item or missed.
  4. You may only start sink tasks after a Prefect has verified you can sink an item.
  5. Each sink attempt must be verified by a Prefect; tally of items sunk will be posted after confirmation.
  6. After you've sunk all of your opponents items NO MORE hit attempts may be made; hit attempts posted after the final sink post will be disregarded and not counted for points.
  7. Each House may make up to 3 hit attempts at one time for a Prefect to confirm.
  8. After a maximum of 3 uninterrupted hit attempts have been made by a House, they must wait for either a) the opposing House to return fire or b) a span of 3 hours before they are allowed to submit another hit attempt.  (Sink attempts do not count towards this limit)
    1. Example: Ravenclaw makes 2 attempts, then Hufflepuff slides 3 attempts in. Ravenclaw needs to submit another hit attempt before Hufflepuff can submit another one.
    2. Even if there is a good volley going, each House may have a maximum of 3 unchecked hits posted in the thread before they can submit another.
  9. If your opponent has already sunk all of your items but you have more of theirs to sink still, you do not have to wait 3 hours to submit more hit attempts -- however, there is still a maximum of 3 hit attempts you can make at a time, and Prefect confirmation is needed before submitting more.
  10. Double posting is fine for this event. We are asking that players not edit their posts to make it easier to track the tasks.

Yes, you can make your strategy threads in your House Cup subforum in your CR!

Also, non-admin Gamekeepers are allowed to play, as well, so any Gamekeepers for your own House will be able to participate, while Gamekeepers from other Houses will not be able to see into your HC subforum for this event.

One more question @magemadi @MalfoysAngel

Regarding the reviews for the sinks: can they be reviews for something else as well, such as a forum request, or a prize review, or a swap, etc?

Reviews should be brand new and left specifically for this event -- no swaps/request/prize/etc. reviews will be allowed.

Guyssss this sounds like so much fun! So I think I get, but I never really played Battleship before. So if the other team sinks 1 square of an item, does that mean the entire item is gone? And is it 3 hits to each square of an item (so Hufflepuff's Cup needs 18 hits to sink) or 3 hits all together on the entire item that sinks it?

Great question! So in Battleship, each ship takes up a certain number of spaces, and you have to hit each of those spaces in order to successfully sink the ship (not literal ships in our case, but House items).

Our game is similar -- you must hit each space occupied by your opponent's item. So, say Ravenclaw hides their Comet 260 (4 boxes) across spaces B1-B4 on their grid. You must hit boxes B1, B2, B3, and B4. As you're successfully hitting boxes where your opponent has hidden an object, you will be informed that it was a Hit, rather than a Miss (a Miss is a box where there is no item). You will not be told which item you've hit until you've successfully hit all boxes for that item (so through trial and error you have to figure out which shapes are hidden where on the grid). Once you have hit the final box for any given item, a Prefect will confirm that you have now hit (for example) all squares for the Comet 260, and then you must do a "Sink" task in order to complete your attack and sink it. So, to sink the Comet 260, you must do 4 successful Hits, plus a Sink.

The 3 hits rule doesn't have to do with what it takes to hit an object. That's there to make sure one team doesn't do 30 Hit tasks all at once and basically attack half their opponent's board all in one go, because then there's really no sense of interactive gameplay.  :)

Each of your Hit tasks entitles you to guess one square of your opponent's grid. So you could submit, as a House, up to 3 Hit tasks at once and guess, for example, B1, D5, and G6, and a Prefect will confirm whether you've hit any items on those squares. As you complete additional tasks (after your opponent has returned fire or the requisite amount of time has passed) to launch more Hit attempts, you should start to figure out which items are hidden where, based on which boxes are Hits and which are Misses.

Is the sink directed into a square?

Nope! Just the item itself in general.

@magemadi @MalfoysAngel  When y'all say you make a hit by posting a link and position to 'the board' - does that mean this board here or the one in our CR?

When the round starts, there will be a game thread where you will post your tasks.

ATTENTION EVERYONE!

Going forward, we are kindly asking that players NOT edit their posts in order to make it easier for us to track the tasks. Double posting is perfectly fine for the purposes of the event.

This has been edited into the main post as rule #10

just wondering if you'll tell us automatically that we've made all hits on one item and we can start sinking it or do we need to ask or...? (because some smaller items could potentially be parts of uhh bigger items if that makes sense?)

We'll tell you when you've made all the hits on a single item and can therefore start your sink task. :)

For this task

Quote

revive (aka post in) one (1) archived thread (200 character minimum)

is this post in threads that are in archived areas, such as here? Or somewhere else? Because I can't seem to be able to post in any threads there

@RonsGirlFriday @magemadi hi! just to clarify: 'review two (2) stories from the opposing House' - do the reviews specifically have to be for two different stories, or do two different chapters in the same story count as well?

Hey prefects!

Question: are teams only allotted 3 guessing attempts between prefect confirmations?

Or do we only have 3 uninterrupted guessing attempts and as soon as the other team makes a guess, our guess limit resets? (ie Ravenclaw guesses 2 times, Hufflepuff guesses 1 time, and then Ravenclaw guesses 2 more times before a prefect next confirms (which leaves Ravenclaw with 4 guesses for confirmation total).)

Hey Abby! As per the following quote, it should be a maximum of 3 guessing attempts period -- we weren't sticking to this super well last night as there was a lot going on, but if everyone could refrain from posting more than 3 total guesses (even if there is good return fire happening) at a single time for the Prefects' sanity.

Rules Clarification on hit attempts for next round:

  • When making hit attempts, each House may make a maximum of three (3) uninterrupted hit attempts at a single time.
  • When there is a volley of hit attempts between the Houses occurring, there is still a limit of three (3) unchecked hit attempts that may be posted by a single House before they can post another. This is to help us poor Prefects not get overwhelmed with having to check 10+ posts in a short amount of time and will help reduce possible missed posts.
    • What this means in an example:
      • Ravenclaw posts 1 hit attempt, then Hufflepuff posts 2 hit attempts; Ravenclaw posts 2 more hit attempts, and Hufflepuff posts 1 more hit attempt.
        • Both Houses must now wait for Prefect confirmation on all 3 of their attempts before either can post again.
        • After a Prefect has checked these 6 hit attempts, Hufflepuff can then only post 2 more hit attempts right away, but Ravenclaw can post 3 hit attempts right away after the previous ones were checked.

If anyone still has questions about how this process is meant to go, please let us know!

Also, as a reminder -- Houses MAY NOT pre-prepare tasks for hit or sink attempts before the subsequent rounds start -- that is unfair to other Houses and isn't in the spirit of the live-response rapid-fire nature of the game. :)

Maybe I am still half asleep, but in the above scenario once all posts are checked, why may one house return fire three times and the other two? Like what determines that? And when is the house who can only return two hit attempts able to return a third? @MalfoysAngel @RonsGirlFriday
