Cassius Alcindor Posted October 26, 2020 Posted October 26, 2020 Summary: After going through a rough breakup and losing her job, Katie McFadden makes a spontaneous decision to embark on a solo backpacking trip through Europe. When the Covid-19 pandemic prevents her from flying home on schedule, she is forced to quarantine in a remote Bed & Breakfast with a handsome stranger. Sparks are flying, but can their new relationship go the (social) distance? Or will his secret identity complicate things? Spoiler alert: Who doesn't love a good cheesy royal romance? The tropes of the romance genre royal romance subgenre are well known, but how will these stories be changed by a global pandemic? In this story, I will attempt to take a stab at the soon-to-be popular genre of "Covid Cozy" romances. I'm usually more of an architect than a gardener, but this one I'm completely making up as I go along. The thing I'm not quite sure about is if I will be able to play it straight, or if it will be a satire in the vein of the Dramione's I've written. I'm aiming for it to be right on the line where it could go either way. It's OF, but my MC is a big HP fan and there's plenty of meta fandom references along the way. Other projects: I'm also continuing to work on my nautical-based Korean War espionage novel "North of Nastrand." Progress has been slow and steady as try to figure out how to pull the different plot threads together. I will finish it someday! Best of luck to everybody! Happy Nano!
victoria_anne Posted October 26, 2020 Posted October 26, 2020 Omg... this actually sounds amazing. I love trapped together fics but I never thought about applying one to the pandemic, that's brilliant Can you tell me more about the characters? And what is your writing process like? Music, snacks, a desk? Looking forward to this one!
ineffable_season Posted October 27, 2020 Posted October 27, 2020 Hey, I think we can all use a little fluff and good feels these days. I am all for this "cozy covid," read! So are there going to be other characters at this cozy little B&B or just those two cuties? Either way...I'm definitely looking forward to this! And your espionage project sounds super cool! I'm always in awe of people who can write spy or mystery novels...I feel like I'm far too obvious with my writing approach. How long have you been working on that one? Courtney

Music, snacks, a desk? Looking forward to this one! Thanks for stopping by the nest! Katie is meant to be the classic relatable girl-next-door trope, but hopefully not in a boring and lame way like Bella from Twilight. She has a sense of humor that I hope will add amusement to the story. Her ex-bf was a struggling comedian, but she's actually funnier:) As for the Prince, mostly along the lines of the classic "wants to be a regular guy but feels trapped by his hereditary duties" trope. I like to listen to music when I write, but I find lyrics pretty distracting, so I mainly stick to instrumental music. Most of the time I end up listening to movie soundtracks. And snacks are a must! 18 hours ago, prideofprewett said: Hey, I think we can all use a little fluff and good feels these days. I am all for this "cozy covid," read! We could definitely al use a little cozy right now:) For now I'm envisioning a handful of other guests at the B&B, mostly in supporting/comic relief type roles. Been working on the espionage one for a few months now, but progress has been pretty slow. Funny that you mention being too obvious, because I am currently re-working some things after realizing that the character I had planned to be the mole was way too obvious haha.
magemadi Posted October 30, 2020 Posted October 30, 2020 Hi there! I’m not usually one for rom-com type fics, but nevertheless your new project sounds very intriguing and I think your stab at this genre of “covid cozy” stories will be a great one! I’m glad to see you’re also going to be continuing to work on your espionage story as that sounded super interesting to me during JulNo. What drew you to write this romance fluff in covid times? Do you have ideas for how long it’ll be exactly? Got any kooky characters you’re excited to have show up in this bed and breakfast? Good luck on both projects!!

This idea was pretty random, my wife and I were joking around one day about how many things are different now and we somehow ended up on the subject of romance movies. The plot idea just kind of grew from there. I'm thinking it's gonna be around novella-length, but we'll see how it goes. As for kooky characters, I'm thinking there needs to be an older British couple in the mold of Hyacinth and Richard from Keeping Up Appearances. The espionage story is going slow and steady. It'll be finished at some point but there will probably be a lot of editing and re-writes along the way.
