page thirteen. Posted October 27, 2020 Posted October 27, 2020 Hello! It's been eight years since I tried to do a Nanowrimo but I think it's about time I tried again :'D Between work and life, I'm not sure I'll hit the 50k but I'm interested to see how far I get. I have 2 projects, and I will aim for 25k on each (not sure they'll end up being 25k or if they'll be longer or shorter, but... 25k is a good start)! I have no fancy images (i know right??) but I do have summaries, so I'm getting somewhere! Both are original fiction, ofc, and are likely to be posted on the archives eventually, once I've done initial edits \o/ Broadway Quote “So you’d like me to pretend to date you in the hopes that your parents are horrified by my criminal tendencies and then break up with you dramatically, all because you want to go on a gap year around Europe with a fake broken heart?” “Oh, sure, when you put it like that, it sounds like a weird idea.” Broadway takes place in the High Stakes universe, but with characters who aren't mentioned in that one - just sort of living in the same world, but aren't affected by one another, essentially. But I'm excited to try my hand at a fake dating fic because I love fake dating lmao. & Lovers, Soldiers and Sailors Quote you will have nothing that you want / and everything you need This is a little more removed, and based more on Greek mythology; I'm not sure it'll be long, maybe just a few chapters - but it's more timeless in the sense of where and when it takes place. But I'm excited to write something weird, regardless. Also, obviously, High Stakes will get more edits and be posted on the archive but as the first draft is wholly done, I'm not counting that towards nano (sorry HS!).
ineffable_season Posted October 27, 2020 Posted October 27, 2020 I also did NaNo many years ago and am getting back into it again this year...high five! And yay original fiction is fun! I hope you don't mind if I ask you a few questions. In your Broadway fic, do you have names for the characters who are in the above snippet? What's your favorite thing about them so far? Also, Greek mythology is so fun. I feel like my knowledge of it is so terrible though though hah. But I still love reading things about it and then like side researching in order to see where the story makes references or intersects hah. I know I'm kind of weird like that. What's your favorite Greek myth?

What's your favorite Greek myth? @prideofprewett omg yes good luck to you! i hope to see you at the finish line then! (it's daunting getting back into it lsjdflds) for broadway- i do, in fact! the first character speaking is czerny - he's the criminal in this scenario, running an underground bar called the speakeasy where people sell secrets, etc., so he knows everything about everyone; really, my favourite thing about him is that he's super insular but at the same time is like, "perhaps... i will enjoy this shenanigan?" spoiler alert czerny, you do the second is ayush, who's more straight-laced, very family-oriented, and really, really wants a gap year LOL. i think my favourite thing about him is that his best idea for getting a gap year is him going "what if i hit up my old childhood friend for the worst caper of our time?" and somehow.. this works??? in HS, a lot of the characters are very serious with sort of moments of brevity; i think i'll like broadway because it'll be the exact opposite my knowledge of greek mythology is equally terrible, but i am reliant on wikipedia, etc, and some past knowledge. i guess i'm more inspired by the ~idea of greek mythology, maybe. i don't have a favourite, but i like reading all of the terrible conclusions of them like persephone/hades, orpheus/eurydice, narcissus, echo, etc. also sometimes i think about how the minotaur came about and i'm like, Yike, but that's not a favourite, that's just me having some strong judgement lsjdflsj

I do have a few questions if you don't mind answering them what are the ages of your characters? since you've said their childhood friends but one is about to have a gap year and the other is running a bar, is czerny a year or so older? also if czerny is older, (and if this doesn't spoil anything), did ayush have a crush on him when they were younger??? so like a fake dating my childhood crush and then for lovers, soldiers, and sailors - are you planning to make it a tragedy of sorts with a powerful god/goddess if you aren't going off a specific myth? and will there be some sort of doomed romance? im super excited to see both of these up on the archives!
grumpy cat Posted October 28, 2020 Posted October 28, 2020 okay but both of these are fantastic and i'm very ~excited about them and you're legit so witty and those summaries are great a+++
Darling_take_off_the_mask Posted October 29, 2020 Posted October 29, 2020 Hi Jade! I’m not familiar with your High Stakes universe, but will there be things in Broadway that make it recognizable to HS readers as being in the same universe? Cameos of HS characters or anything like that? What’s the significance of the title Broadway? I’m so intrigued by your summary/ tag line for Lovers, Soldiers and Sailors! What was the inspiration for this story? Who are your main characters for this one? What will be the conflict or the quest? Good luck with NaNo!

(i wish) i haven't figured out the exact ages (Should i do that? maybe) but ayush is about to finish his post-grad - in england, before one can practise what he's studying, they have to do a post-grad and then a short internship; ayush is trying to put off the internship, specifically! so he's around 22-23, depending on ... his vibes, i guess. maybe 24? but i think 23. czerny is the same age; they met in school, were raised in the same area, parents worked together, etc. but czerny left school very early on and his bar is a bit more shady in nature >D so he gets away with owning it at a young age. so no age difference apart from a few months! but i cannot confirm whether or not ayush had a thing for him earlier on for LSS - honestly, maybe! maybe not so much a god/goddess, but i was thinking of things like persephone/hades, orpheus/eurydice, and specifically this was a consideration for an entry for paula's challenge - my brain went "replace the underworld with the feywild" and i went "absolutely brilliant brain, you've only gone and nailed it." i think because of that (and the very specific rules the feywild has), it sort of lends well to tragedy and maybe some doom - i'll be honest, i haven't figured out the ending yet! 22 hours ago, pirate grumpy cat said: okay but both of these are fantastic and i'm very ~excited about them and you're legit so witty and those summaries are great a+++ ily2 kris thank u for ur kind words T_T 17 hours ago, RonsGirlFriday said: Hi Jade! What was the inspiration for this story? Who are your main characters for this one? What will be the conflict or the quest? Good luck with NaNo! hello hello! i am hoping there won't be honestly. i sort of am using high stakes (criminals in a modern day london) as a background rather than a main story (sort of like: if i say it's in the HS universe, i don't have to do additional worldbuilding; i just have to re-iterate things in a new piece). i am not sure about cameos, therefore! i think if i did, i'd want them to make sense, not just like, "someone walked by" LOL. there are definitely characters and nods in HS to broadway, but like those references, i'd like it if people don't have to read both to get it... if that makes sense broadway is a cards term! it refers to the five highest ranked cards (ace - 10) in order; i wanted a cards term that hinted at the characters a little over the course of it, and this stood out to me! other considerations were counting cards and card sharks, but that felt too on the nose :'D i think i mentioned this to lo as well, but it was all the consideration of switching out the underworld with the feywild in greek mythology. i liked the idea of nodding at these original myths but telling it in a more fairytale-like way, and this idea popped up :'D like broadway, it's a love story at it's core, but with much less of a supporting cast (for Reasons). so the main characters stand as: effy who is our narrator, who is sort of more shy and reserved - i want her to come into her own during the course of the story, so she starts out a little unsure but quite determined in her own way. i see her as someone who really objectively likes the Truth so all of this weirdness is very disconcerting to her - a lot of what she does is for annabel, the woman she loves but who has gone missing, but then starts to become about who she's becoming in the process and ig as described, our core plot is that annabel goes missing - effy goes looking for her and then Things happen >D thank u for stopping by y'all!
magemadi Posted November 1, 2020 Posted November 1, 2020 Heya Jade, welcome back to the NaNo train! Both of your OF pieces sound quite intriguing, though I have to say I haven’t yet read High Stakes I’ll get there, I promise!! I think 25k for each project is a great starting goal though, and of course can be adjusted based on how the writing pans out. I’m curious -- how will the title of Broadway tie into the actual plot based on what the summary is? I am always a sucker for Greek mythology inspired fiction, so are you going for inspiration from some of the general/more well-known Greek myths/figures or are you going for more of a deep cut for where you’re going to be using imagery and references and such?

I am always a sucker for Greek mythology inspired fiction, so are you going for inspiration from some of the general/more well-known Greek myths/figures or are you going for more of a deep cut for where you’re going to be using imagery and references and such? hi madi!!! sorry 4 the late reply (25k is pretty much how i felt too, like I don't think these will stop at 25k but i really didn't want to overwhelm myself LOL) Broadway is a reference to "broadway straight", the top five cards someone can have in a hand (ace, k, g, q, 10) and therefore often a winning hand. it requires a lot of luck and opportunity to get a hand like that, and i thought that worked out well for this story, as well as the fact it opens up to gambling metaphors (always fun) with the pair of them, taking a ~risk on this idea (and maybe even a risk on love??? oh my). i also liked that it's a broadway straight and neither of them are straight but that's just something to amuse me lfldjfs (like how high stakes' title is a pun in heist) i have now written enough of LSS to say it's more of an imagery than a specific sort of characterisation/myth/etc, because the more i've written, the more i've realised it's fallen into a niche of sort of... fairy tales? i don't know if that's the term i want, but the writing has become more fantastical and mystical than the straight-laced writing i usually do - which i like! it's fun to mess around with descriptions and try out new metaphors, but LSS is definitely leaning away from greek myth and more into fairy tales/cautionary tales for your kids ----------------------------------- it's now been 8 days! i had a very rocky start to the week, so i wrote heavily over the weekend to catch up/give me a buffer. nanowrimo's site says i'm on track! (thanks nano) the word count basically shakes out to this: broadway / 6046 lovers, soldiers and sailors / 7957 total / 14003
