sapphicsunrise Posted November 3, 2020 Posted November 3, 2020 this year marks an entire decade since i started doing Nano and since this idea popped fully-formed into my head over dinner last week i have gleefully succumbed to the siren call that is november I haven't gotten very far with planning at this stage - all I have is the premise and some vague ideas for subplots and scenes. no doubt i'll add to this as I go. THE PREMISE: The recently discovered art of time travel is highly restricted and secretive - the only people who can travel back in time are a small group of carefully chosen historians. As the opportunities for time travel develop and expand, the decision is made to launch a pilot programme for a new, specialised Masters degree to train graduates in the methodology and ethics of time travel historiography. This is the story of that first intake. THE CHARACTERS: There will be approx. 10-15 students in the cohort, taught and supervised by around half a dozen academics. the cohort is made up of recent history Honours graduates from various universities around New Zealand, because i write what i know NZ is historically a popular guinea pig nation for new initiatives. i don't know who any of them are and none of them have names yet, but the dynamic will be excellent WHAT TO EXPECT: Some tough ethical and moral issues around not intervening in terrible things, interspersed with some esoteric humour about historiography, a lot of time travel mishaps, and a bunch of academic nonsense
mydearfoxy Posted November 3, 2020 Posted November 3, 2020 HELLO! I saw this idea on discord and I am in love with it. IN LOVE. Some questions for you! 1. Are there any specific historical moments you plan to include that you're excited to write about? 2. Will the time travel occur in New Zealand, too? Or will they be going to more different places in the past? 3. Will there be any travel into the future? 4. The dynamic will be excellent. This isn't a question. I just really enjoy your character dynamics. 5. Will it be gay? I would like it if there was some gay. Do you have any thoughts about romance? xoxo
sapphicsunrise Posted November 3, 2020 Author Posted November 3, 2020 renee thank you for the enthusiasm and the questions! 1. Are there any specific historical moments you plan to include that you're excited to write about? i'm thinking there will definitely be some big turning point moments that will be used explicitly for teaching purposes in the classes. some of them will be very grim in the "you cannot intervene or change things no matter what" kind of way, but i intend to balance that out with some more lighthearted stuff. the first two classes will be structured around major historical events more or less, and then there's scope to be a bit more niche in the other classes and the students' fieldwork. the class on premodern survival is going to be especially fun for me 2. Will the time travel occur in New Zealand, too? Or will they be going to more different places in the past? you know this is a very good point because i had literally not thought about the fact they will need to travel through space to get to major historical events and this is not a world that has teleportation in it, it's just the time travel. the answer, though, is that there'll be a mix depending on the students' research interests. New Zealand historians won't have to go very far afield but everyone else will 3. Will there be any travel into the future? not as yet but i wouldn't rule it out. i can imagine it being used in a 'ghosts of christmas yet to come' kind of way to scare world leaders into action on climate change tho. oho. now that's social commentary 4. The dynamic will be excellent. This isn't a question. I just really enjoy your character dynamics. ily 5. Will it be gay? I would like it if there was some gay. Do you have any thoughts about romance? it will be gay yes. i have named one (1) character so far and given him a backstory and the backstory is that he met a man in a bar and was so captivated by him that he changed his entire life trajectory
grumpy cat Posted November 3, 2020 Posted November 3, 2020 i love this that is all!!!!! i've got a tiny lil question - is there a chance they might go back in time and like discover things aren't actually the way they thought they were/were taught? idk if the question makes sense but i'm under the influence of the 'history is written by the victors' thingie
