sibilant Posted December 1, 2020 Posted December 1, 2020 hello! first off, thanks for dropping by my wishlist, i really appreciate it! first, a few facts about me, in case we haven't talked much: i'm an engineering student who's actually more interested in the humanities (lol oops). i really like philosophy, sociology, anthropology, literature, and history, in addition to STEM, and as an activist, i'm especially interested in questions that relate to social justice books-wise: my book interests are pretty diverse, but generally i like all kinds of nonfiction, romance, and family-focused books. i have special fondness for memoirs. check out my goodreads for more details on what i like to read! fics-wise: also pretty diverse, but generally i like compelling, complicated characters and swoon-worthy romance plots and the rest is just the cherry on top. tropes-wise, i'm pretty partial to friends-to-lovers, mutual pining, slow burn, unrequited love, enemies to lovers, found family, time travel aus, mermaid aus (ahem...), magical realism, oh my god there was only one bed., smut..i think you get the picture. i really love characters that are messy and resist being easily described. i also really really love poetry. writing-wise: i'm especially fond of parvati and padma patil, cho chang, and neville longbottom. check out my writer's journal if you'd like to get a sense of the sorts of things i like to write fandoms-wise: harry potter, avatar the last airbender, parks and rec, pride and prejudice, the good place, brooklyn 99...i'm pretty flexible honestly. other shit i like: i'm a fan of cross stitching (though generally bad at other artistic things) i'm an academic by nature so like, i love fun research articles lol. i recently watched princess mononoke and immediately started looking for academic papers analyzing the movie lol i love podcasts! in particular, i enjoy: the daily, the ezra klein show, nice white parents, the 1619 project, 99% invisible, wait wait don't tell me, on being, many others... i really like personality tests/personality frameworks, like astrology, MBTI, enneagram, etc lol. also love the fake ones too haha what i would like: be my friend on goodreads! and tell me about a few books you love and why you love them (even better if you think that i might like them too, but like, i just love to hear people geeking out about things they love) share cute comics; i really love following cute comic artists on insta, and would love to follow more. (alternatively: i will reverse-gift you a cute insta comic artist if you would like) tell me about a couple fics that you really enjoy, either ones that you wrote or that others wrote share a rec for a podcast you love! conduct an analysis of your characters using some framework (perhaps the sorting hat chats, or analyze their love language, or their MBTI type) and post it in your WJ and share the link with me! hype yourself up! make a post in your WJ appreciating one thing about every fic you've written this year (or however many fics you'd like to appreciate). i did something similar this summer and found it to be a really fun exercise. find cute cross stitch patterns that you like (i'm a fan of fandom-related cross stitch patterns, subversive patterns, pretty natural patterns, mandalas, etc, but honestly, whatever strikes you would be absolutely love to see) (this would make me happiest) if you have the means, i would love if you could donate to a non-profit of your choosing that you think advances a social cause you care about and contributes to the public interest. this could mean supporting your local radio station, an organization that fights white supremacy, an organization that advances the rights of LGBTQ+ people, your public library, a prison book program, etc. find a cause you really care about and actively seek out an organization that is helping that cause. i understand that not everyone is able to donate at this time, but i'd love if you could find some other way of supporting this organization, whether that's signing a petition that they're supporting or spreading the word about them to your friends. thank you, and hope everyone is staying safe and well

(alternatively: i will reverse-gift you a cute insta comic artist if you would like) I love icandrawthingz! Their webtoon itself is up on webtoons, but they post sneak peeks on insta. The Blind Prince (romance/fantasy) When a series of mistakes leave shy, unassuming Elaine trapped in a world of magic and faeries, she must do whatever it takes to return home. Even making a shifty deal with a rather. . . insightful young prince.
ineffable_season Posted December 3, 2020 Posted December 3, 2020 Hi Shreya! We haven't talked much here, but I'm Courtney. I think your list of wishes is so incredibly sweet as it centers mainly on doing acts of kindness for others! I see you are also an avid reader, and one of your wishes is to be friends with people on goodreads. I couldn't find you there (I promise I didn't stalk you too hard to try and find it), but would absolutely love to be your friend on there (if you're willing, of course, if not, just feel free to ignore this nbd ). Here's a link to my profile [goodreads], if you would be interested. Also, below are some recommendations of books that I love (along with reasons why I love them). A Long Petal of the Sea by Isabel Allende (I'll probably forever recommend this for a romance pick)-> It's just so beautifully written! It's a long winded romantic tale that has everything in it! And it's about a part of the world that we don't see featured or centered often on platforms like bookstagram and such. So this is one I will shout from the rooftops about. Little Fires Everywhere or Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng-> I love a good family drama that feat. other complicated themes and tropes. Both of these books have that. Plus, Celeste Ng is a twitter delight (see her one about anthropomorphizing clementine's & her appeal to publishing companies about not doing a Trump memoir). Fromage a Trois by Victoria Brownlee-> I mean if you like cheese and are looking for just a totally cute, light hearted romance, this is it. I read this at a time in my life when I just needed a distraction and something to make me feel good about stuff and well...I love cheese and wine and...this was what I needed at the time. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo-> Another book I will forever recommend for romance. I love Old Hollywood (well the image/idea of it, not what actually happened because it was horrendous) and an individual who is totally in control of their sexual destiny. And that is Evelyn Hugo. That and the supporting cast of characters are very interesting. And, just in case you have not read it, that end line. It really resonated deep within my chest. Anyway, I don't know if these books appeal to you at all, or if you've read any of them, or if you hated any of them? But either way, I hope you will accept my little holiday gift! Courtney P.S. I have a non-profit/charity-esque request in my wishlist as well. Feel free to check it out if there's a particular cause or organization that is especially dear to you

Hawksquill Posted December 22, 2020 Posted December 22, 2020 Hi Shreya! First of all, I'll make an extra holiday donation to a local charity in your honor. I'd also love to be your friend on Goodreads, I'll PM you a link to my page! Lastly, a few book recs. Since you like families, magical realism, and nonfiction, here are a few of my faves: Little, Big by John Crowley. Fairies, multigenerational family saga, magical realism, a dash of dystopia and hermeticism and some gorgeous prose thrown in...I've rec'd this book elsewhere but based on some of your book tastes I do think you might enjoy it in particular! Killers of the Flower Moon by David Grann - nonfiction that reads like a thriller. It's about Osage people in the 20th century who were forcibly removed by the US government to land that happened to have a lot of really valuable oil, making them very wealthy. It's basically about how white people (and the entire white supremacist legal and political framework of the time) worked to systematically strip them of their wealth and their lives as much as possible. Also, some interesting stuff about the early FBI. Five Days at Memorial by Sheri Fink - again, if you're a STEM and philosophy/ethics person I'd highly recommend! Truly impressive investigative journalism about the total failure of a hospital in the aftermath of Katrina. Tons of personal interviews with survivors and a pretty searing takedown of the corporatization of American healthcare, the lack of funding and preparation for natural disasters both in hospitals and at the federal level, and the practice of de facto euthanizing patients without their consent, both during disasters but also with some pretty horrifying implications about this particular hospital under normal circumstances. Happy holidays!
Darling_take_off_the_mask Posted January 19, 2021 Posted January 19, 2021 Hi @sibilant Shreya! I actually, a few weeks ago, made a donation to a local women's shelter, but I hadn't posted in your thread yet because I also wanted to do a blog post with a character Sorting -- and I've already Sorted the character, I've just been lazy about doing the blog. But anyway, seeing as this forum is now being archived I just wanted to slide in here. I'll tag you when I do the blog post, though! Also, of course, we are now friends on Goodreads since I've finally joined, yay!
