Aphoride Posted December 21, 2022 Posted December 21, 2022 kriiiiiiiisss i'm here to drop off some wj questions+ (i know they weren't officially on your list, but i realised i'd never stopped at your new wj yet which was an Error and needed rectifying) and some recommendations:: a. book series: the emperor's blades + sequels by brian staveley: there's an emperor and his three children, all scattered across the world doing different things and learning different skills, there's a conspiracy, there's a lot of kickass women, there's a lot of people dying, there's a lot of swearing and general swaggering about and some fairly creepy (crazy) monks (fair warning: some reviews criticised the way a lot of the women are viewed in the book. some of it is intentional - there is sexism in the world and it is mentioned when it happens to people (like adare, who's a pov character) but some of it can't really be explained away that way. the first book is the weakest though - and the prequel, skullsworn is just a fun story about a cool female assassin ) b. books: malice by john gwynne: there's a prophecy, there's a bunch of kings trying to find the champion to fulfil the prophecy, there's some people who might not be trying to find the champion for the Right Reasons, there's a boy who wants to be a warrior, there's a load of cool and varied female characters, there's a lot of Feels and a lot of whump to go with the violence, there's a bit of Politics and good people in bad situations... honestly, this is probably better than the emperor's blades, though i liked both - but it is a bit more classic fantasy-ish, with a grimdark feel and setting and plot, rather than super grimdark characters. it is good though and it's a series that starts well and comes into its own as it goes on c. tv show: one day at a time: it's on netflix in the uk - it's about a latinx family living in la, their lives, their trials, their joys, everything. it's got the family feel of schitt's creek, and it's genuinely, genuinely funny (though there are some more serious, emotional moments). i watched it entirely by random and loved it!! d. tv show: vincenzo: okay so i think k-dramas have the lead in managing to do bloody, violent, action-type dramas with a real side-helping of humour?? even if they don't, this is both action-packed (and bloody with it) and at times genuinely laugh-out-loud funny?? a mafia lawyer goes home to south korea from italy and gives a rival company a real kicking - but omg it's so good. it's really so so good 1
