In This Darkness

Ch. 15 is currently in the queue. And... a lot happened there. Which is good. Because it's been a goal of mine to keep the plot constantly moving forward. But it's also left my brain quite deflated and a bit overwhelmed sooooooo I'll be happy if I can get at least one good starting scene for Ch. 16. [word goal 1,000]

In This Darkness

Chapter 29 is also currently in the queue. I can't believe I'm so close to wrapping this one up. Writing that final chapter is definitely my goal for this nano. [word goal 1,000]

Untitled

I've had various Mason/Oscar scenes floating in my head ever since I started rewriting ITD last year andddd I think now might be the time to actually put it down to paper. It won't be novel length though. I'm gonna try to keep the chapters short and light (to balance the ITD heaviness). I'm thinking it'll start the summer before ITD and will run through that same year from a different perspective. And it might not be the whole year. It might just be a portion of it. Still not decided on the exact timeline. Anyways, if goals are met, this will be entered as my 'friends don't' challenge entry for @dreamshadow. [word goal 6,000]

Total Word Goal: 8K

Can't wait to see what this nano brings for all of us. ❤️

Just realized I wrote In This Darkness instead of In Light of You on that second one ::facepalms::

I'm just that level tired haha

Quilly, yaya! I'm so excited to get to Ch 15 of in this darkness when it goes live! You're doing so well with that story, balancing all the larger world plots alongside the teenage drama. Every chapter feels so incredibly crafted. I can relate to the whole "I'm so burnt out after posting a big chapter,"  feeling. I often have to do other things and step away from writing for a bit to replenish my creative well. What are some things you do to replenish your creative well? Do you step away from your writing a time and focus on other things? Or do you just keep chipping away at it, but then set aside days where you do more writing/editing than others? Just curious since you have been working on this story for a while and have been very good at continuously updating it! :)

Good luck this month!

Courtney! ?

Honestly, I sometimes just take a break from writing after posting a big chapter. I'll spend sometime focusing on some other project I have going on in RL. I'll also turn to books and just like binge read a couple of things at the same time. If it's been more than a month, I'll come back and start writing, and try to at least get a few hundred words every day. A lot of the times (like right now) the same couple hundred words get rewritten a few hundred times before anything catches well enough to get me going on a chapter/scene.

During nano, I do try to set apart at least an hour every night to writing. Otherwise, I don't really have any sort of schedule.

Ahh thank you. Sometimes I feel like it takes me forever to come up with a chapter. It's nice to hear that my updates feel consistent enough. ☺️

Oh, my Merlin!!! A Mason/Oscar side story??? For Jill's challenge???

Jokes aside, you know I'm a big fan of those two and how much I ship them, so I'm totally fangirling here, this is the brst news! :D  :cheering:

But also, wow, that's that'sof ambitious goals you have! Good luck with them all! And I can't believe you are so close to completing "In light of you"! I'm super impressed by the constance and dedication a lot of people put in that challenge, to the point that some of you are still working on their collections to get all 30 prompts done! :P It's awesome! I'm very curious to see how you wrap it all up!

And of course I'm excited for more "In this darkness"! Can't wait to find out how it all wraps up! What else do you have in store for Lily and Xander and all of us poor readers? :P

So, to cut this "short", good luck for all your NaNo goals (and for the Inkys, too ;)) Hope you'll reach all your goals, or at least make some good progress! :D

Ahhh thank you so much! I really hope it doesn't disappoint. I've been spending most (okay, all) of my nano writing time so far working on this and I'm still not completely sure of the direction it's taking lol Honestly, I think it's just the fact that I have a lot of love for those two characters, and I really do them justice with this story.  I'm just crossing my fingers it comes together before the challenge's due date ?

I seriously still don't have a clue what this chapter is going to look like so I'm probably going to jus start writing down random things and see what comes out of it ?

Lily and Xander... They both need to do a lot of growing, so hopefully we'll start seeing some of that. Lmbo. In all honesty, I think we *do* start to see glimpses of that in Chapter 15 :)

Thank you so much for stopping by Chiara ❤️

Quilly! I love that you may be expanding upon your ITD universe with the Mason/Oscar fic. It's cool to see multiple fics which are connected but focused on entirely different characters/ships -- I feel like you don't often see that!

What is it about Mason and Oscar, amongst all your other OC's, that's calling out to you to write their story? Are the scenes in your head relating to the ITD plotline, or are they more Mason/Oscar slice of life?

If you had endless time and brainpower, what would the rest of the ITDCU (In This Darkness Cinematic Universe) look like? What other fics do you think it would be cool to write about ITD characters, even if you know you'll never actually get to write them?

I think, firstly, it was the fact that I love these two so much but simply did not have enough room in ITD to showcase them enough. And I felt like they could be given their own story without spoiling the major plot points for ITD.

The scenes I've had in my head sort of relate to ITD because they do play a big part in the story but I started mind-drafting them as characters of their own. Like, who is this Oscar Knight that Lily loves so much and why is he the way he is and how does that impact the other relationships in his life? He's such an integral part to that friend group, but he's really not much like them, and I think that alone makes him a fun character to explore.

Honestly probably just about all of Xander and Lily's friends ?

I think Hugo, Kat, and Nia would be on the top of my list but they're all so closely involved to Xander/Lily, it'd be hard to do so without spoilers/inferences to the ITD plotline.

I've written random little drabbles for Edward and for Caroline too but, again, they interfere too much with the ITD plotline.

Xander's mom's backstory is something that I've had to have pretty well-defined in the back of my head in order to plot of ITD, so she's another character that I'm also deeply invested in, even though she never gets to physically appear in ITD. I think I would eventually like to write something for her, but that's a very faraway thought.

And then Teddy/Vic also tend to live rent free in my head. That story might still happen one day.

Thank you so much for coming by with these questions, Melanie ☺️ They gave lots to think about lol

Hi, Quilly!  I had to remark on your use of the term "mind-drafting."  I have never seen/heard that term before, but it's just the right word for the concept it applies to.  Did you invent the term yourself, or do other people say it also?  It's such a succinct expression of what I (and, I guess, lots of people) do.  By the time the quill goes to the parchment, the story is already pretty much written, for better or for worse.

Best of luck on your writing goals for this month!

In This Darkness

Erm, I've written nothing new. But I have yet to recover from that last chapter so ?. I'm still hopeful I'll have something before the end of the month though.

[word goal met: 0/1000]

In Light ofYou

Chapter 30 has been added to the queues and I'm in my feels about it. I can't believe I get to mark a story as "complete."

I wrote several versions of chapter 30 before I settled for the one I posted. I liked that it left with a small glimpse of what's happening with the rest of the family. Also, I got to have my full circle moment and end it with an ending that very closely paralleled the ending of both the first chapter of ILOY and the first chapter of ITD.

(Side note: I have no explanation to my ridiculous need to circle back to beginnings but here I am lol)

Untitled: Friends Don't Challenge

I swear, I've written stuff.

I just don't know how much of it I actually want to use.

My biggest issue has been: I can't decide what POV I want to use. Third person past tense is my go-to but I keep myself reverting back to third person present tense (which is how I wrote ILOY but not necessarily my favorite) and I've even dabbled in first person (which I love to read but have never managed to write.) Also, I don't know whose POV I want to follow. I'm tempted to do a dual POV but, like, that's all I've ever written, and that shouldn't bother me, but it kinda does?

Anyways, now that ILOY is out of the way, I'm gonna focus more on this project.

Total Word Goal Met: 2,391/8,000

Sending everyone lots of inspiration dust. ❤️

Hiii Vicki :) I honestly don't have an answer for that haha The word just came to mind so I might've made it up or it might've been something I'd heard someone say before. Either way, I agree that the earliest drafting goes on in the mind. Although I must admit that, for me, I end up rewriting things to the point where that first idea is a faraway image to the one that ends up showing up in the archives.

Thank you so much for stopping by and I hope all of your writing is going smoothly ❤️

Honestly, third person past tense and multiple POV is my jam and you can never go wrong with that combo :P (also, nothing wrong to sticking to a perspective that works well for your writer mindset ;)) But I can also understand the need to change and experiment at times... and sometimes you just need to play with different choices before finding the perspective that most fits the story/narrative... I'm sure you'll figure it out, though! :cheering: (Did I mention how excited I am for this particular fic? :P)

Also, congrats on marking your first story complete! It's a great feeling, isn't it?

In This Darkness

Nothing new has been written.

(unless we count scenes that have been written out only in my mind, in which case the nano goal has been met and surpassed ?)

But Chapter 15 has been posted on the archives❤️

Here's a little picspam with vibes for that chapter:

Chapter 30 is now in the archives.

Untitled: Friends Don't Challenge

Chapter One has been entirely drafted out (and a good portion of it might even might make it past the editing stages hehe)

I've also been playing with some possible titles and think I might've narrowed it down to the one I'll probably end up using.

I've been spending most all of my writing time/energy drafting the first two chapter of this new story, and I'm semi-surprised by the path it's taken. I'd initially meant it to be this light fluffy love story, but the first two chapters are already sounding plenty angsty. I mean, it's still definitely gonna have it's fluffy moments but I'm just saying - it's not escaping the heaviness that exists in the ITD universe lol. But it's fine. Because it's making for a complicated story with complicated characters and that's the sort of fictional chaos I enjoy writing most haha

In any case, it's been really interesting digging into these two characters + fleshing out their back stories + getting to voice their perception of the events unfolding in ITD. It's been like a fun writing experiment for me.

My emotional attachment to these two boys is growing by the day ❤️
