HP Fanfiction
I like writing all sorts of fic within the Potterverse. My main focus for a while now has been Beyond Repair, a series of one shots about Lily and Petunia. However, over the past year my disappointment in JKR has made it hard for me to get excited about new fic ideas in the Potterverse, unfortunately.

Fandoms
I love the Tortall books by Tamora Pierce, The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer, the Grisha-verse by Leigh Bardugo, Brooklyn 99, The Good Place, Stranger Things, The Dragon Prince, Star Wars Clone Wars and Rebels, and Avatar the Last Airbender.

Books
Favorite book is a frustratingly broad question for a book lover. That said, a few books I literally hugged after finishing include Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz, Life After Life by Kate Atkinson, and The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak. Also all books listed under the fandoms above are GREAT.

Television
Psych, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Avatar the Last Airbender, Sense8, The Magicians, Stranger Things, One Day at a Time, Queer Eye, The Marvelous Mrs. Masel, Brooklyn 99, The Good Place, Batlestar Galactica, Great British Bake Off, almost anything on The Food Network.

Movies
Tangled, Mulan, Super 8, Midnight in Paris, Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day, Some Like it Hot, Roman Holiday, Paper Moon, Inside Out, How to Train Your Dragon, Pleasantville.

HELLO FRIEND

I should have reviewed this story, or at least this chapter, ages and ages ago.

Vic is so super cute, and G is charming and funny and not a gross sexist, and I just really love them.

Also. ALSO. That "not needing handcuffs" line is just.... *chef's kiss*
I mean it's hilarious that she says that but them also his slick little "I wouldn't" is just really hot and also I feel like vic and i might have similar taste even if her scomes with a dick and mine doesn't :P

It's also just really cute that G stayed to keep Vic company during the game, and it's cute how oblivious they both are. I mean not totally, but it's like........ clearly this dude is VERY INTO YOU and yet she remains nervous. Oh, honey.

Sorry this is not coherent because I only have like 5 mintes to leave this review and I'm also literally teaching a class right now so WHOOPS. But yeah this is my favorite part of this story, and I love this story.

also you <3

xoxo Renee

Hello again, dear! <3

Is this about writing fanfiction because I feel like it could be about that. But also, it could be about anything that the reader finds freeing, and that is part of the beauty of the piece. I think anyone - definitely any adult - can relate to wanting to escape from the long to do lists and expectations and monotony and boredom that life can sometimes bring. And especially during the pandemic when it is harder to find adventure in the wider world, fidning adventure within oneself is especially important.

And I love the part about not needing other people to understand.

xoxo Renee

Author's Response:

Hi again, my love! :)

It is partly about fanfiction, yes. I guess it is about art/creativeness in general, and daydreaming, and just escapism in whatever form... I agree, every adult needs some form of it in their lives (or maybe not everyone, but most people... maybe... :P)

And no, you don't need people to understand, everyone should have the right to enjoy what gives them happiness... right?

Thank you so much for stopping by and reviewing!

Love you,

Chiara

I hate to admit it, but I find this super relatable. Don't judge me :P

I mean, I wouldn't expect people to refill my drink at a party or whatever, but there is a certain lazy gleee when you think you're going to have to move from a comfy place and then you end up not needing to. Also, I never really thought about it but it is some BS that hogwarts professors have to teach all day and then patrol at night. Like.... where iis their union?? Teaching is exhausting and it is wrong to interupt sleep time like that.

*gets off soapbox*

Anyways.... yes, I enjoyed this and I really think it is okay that slughorn did not want to get out of bed in the middle of the night :P

Hi Madi <33

This is really cute! I have read some Hermione/Fred stories before, but not many, and it was a fun surprise to find that ship in this story. Are you a fan of that ship, or was this more of an experiment?

It's cute that Fred makes time for her so well. I do think the twin in general seem like they'd be more intuitive romantic than, say..... a certain brother of theirs :P

Also I love that he steals her treats from the kitchen, but only because he does it for her but because the idea of Hermione relishing a good dessert is a fun character trait we don't see in the books.

This is a lot of fun!

Ouch, this really cuts deep. I think Xenophobia sums up a lot of the world's problems, and it's so tragic because of exactly what you say: we see ourselves in these other people and yet we crush them anyway, and that crushes our own spirit, too. And also, as you say, the way all these distinctions arethings we invent or decide to make important so that we can have someone to other.

I really enjoy the image of xenophobic behavior as a ladder, where trying to use it as a road to power will inevitable disempower others.

A sharp take on human behavior.

Hello lovely!

My immediate reaction to this was to remember that "piano" is quiet, but "pianno" is floor, and then I felt like I had passed a pop quiz :P

Even though this is so short, it really captures the engrossed nature of this kind of hobby. I wish I had time to experience this with reading or writing currently. It's so calming and therapeutic to get absorbed in something like that.

You write such a wide variety of things, and you manage to do all of them well. it's really impressive. I dont think you even play piano if I remember correctly, and yet here is this perfect little peek into that experience.

Hello Shreya! <3

I love this concept for a drabble. We all know the expression, but the way you write it makes it seem almost quotidian to steal candy from a baby. Like, "common, who doesn't want to do this?" Especially among children?

I love imagining the baby's big round eyes of sadness while he watches the gulab jamun disappear. It is very gryffindor of parvati to go for it and take what she wants, and very ravenclaw of padma to spend more time observing and weighing her options. I know you have larger headcanons about these characters, but even without that I think you've captured how they are similar and different, and the tug between them that makes Padma cave in to the temptation.

This is a wicked  little gem of a story.

Hello!

I do love a good jaded next gen protagonist. It really does seem that James and Eleanor weren't made to be together anyway, but I get how it's still hard to go through a break up. There's a lot of pressure to not be single and I think that makes the experience extra lonely at times. I can't really argue with someone for wanting to avoid that.

Despite his cavalier attitude about love, James seems like a reasonably sensable person. Or at least, he doesn't want to embarrass his family with a drunken headline, and that seems good. lol. it's a low bar.

This is really fun and I am curious to see where it goes from here.

Hello Jade!

I'm here for the snow foxes and also to read your story, so let's get to it!

I love a heist, and I love a crime syndicate. Basically I am very intrigued. Philip Rothmere III seems like a jerk but I can't help enjoy that sort of mob boss, high profile crime exchange. It's very Mad Men glamourous in a way, if that makes sense.

Can I also say that Cas King is a great name? And speaking of Cas, he is an interesting character, and I think the distant point of view you've taken here works well to up that interest. I can see why Rothmere reads him as lesser, based on how he appears with his team. But at the same time, we don't know as readers how Cas actually feels about being talked to that way. We don't know if Rothmere has judged him correctly... and I think he has not.

The art theft part is *chef's kiss* and it's the perfectc kind of crime to make a thief interesting. I want to know how he did it! Also it's such fun dramatic irony that we know it was Cas but they don't even consider him suspicious.

I'm interested to see if you carry this same narrative voice forward or if it shifts after this chapter.

xoxo Renee

oh my god.

ok, this one is not adorable... but it is hilarious! I love that ESPN is reporting on this sport. It seems very high stakes and intense, so I can see the appeal for the viewing public :P

It's interesting to imagine fish finding the color of another fish "effeninate" and I think it adds to fabulism at play here. Of course, on the other hand, people DO use intimacy and kisses as weapons, of a sort. I mean, not usually, but sometimes. So you have introduced a novel type of kiss via these fish but also hinted at the more nefarious purposes human kisses may serve without making the story lass magic. So that's fun!

ending with "after the break" is hilarious, too. hahaha

Hello again, dear!

Once again, this is adorable!  I love how flamingos can serve as guides for proper date etiquette, and especially proper feeding on one's date. They really do look like cotton candy, although I've never thought of that before. And I would love it if my date bought me cotton candy. I'm not as fond of pretzels, personally, but it's still very true that flamingos have a pretzel-like shape at times. You used flamingos to connect to romance in such a creative way. And of course there are the kisses and the heart-shaped necks. It's like some tropical disney princess montage and I am here for it.

oh my gosh. melting. so so cute!

This is a whole love story in, what, 300 words? maybe? It is absolutely beautful. I thin this is my favorite one so far. I love the description of the boy as "unruffled" because it calls to mind the idea of feathers, and i kind of thought he was a bird, and then you say she accidentally called him a goose and it's all just so playful and perfect. The earrings sound adorable, and a boy who wears them sounds like a boy worth knowing.

loving people is more complicated than loving stories, i have to agree.

Then the kiss anticipation and anxiety and "what if it's all in my head" feelings are so endearing and the kissed eyelids! I'm incoherent, i'm so sorry. It's all just too adorable for me to process. I love it so much.

I think my response is that i, too, love a good fairytale. <3

Hi Eva,

Seeing the world from the point of view of grass is a novel idea. I love the word play with "blade". Also, this makes mowing the lawn feel absolutely barbaric.

the idea of dew as a morning kiss is just so cute! And again, you have managed to portray a different angle on the collection's title that i'd never thought of before.

I've never thought of dew being a result of the sun, even in a strictly scientific sense, but i suppose it is and that makes it extra sweet. it's also fun how the dew is a kiss on the grass, but then the different dew drops also have affection for each other, and it's like love on top of love. Beautiful.

I hadn't heard of camphor trees so I googled them and I love the phrases "like the ground has been in the wrong place all day" to describe them. They do look like heather or something.

The anthropomorphizing of the shy trees with their branches intertwining is really cute. I wonder if you imagine this as a personification of the trees, or as tree nymphs or spirits of some kind, or if this is our butterfly kissing couple, playing shyly on a walk through the woods. I adore it, in any of the three cases.

Aww, what a sweet moment! lingering in bed in the moring with someone giving any kind of kisses - butterfly kisses very much included - is such a beautoful moment. And I feel like a broken record but how do you always capture the tenderness of these things so well? This is so happy and cozy and calm and I absolutely love it. And I love the use of the word cacoon to play on the butterfly kisses expression!

Also, when the "you" pulls the person closer and she grumbles because the butterfly kisses are ruined, it is really humorous somehow? I guess because it's like "i love you too much for delicacy" which i think is a relatable sentiment.

Tiny kisses indeed! I can't imagine a smaller kiss than between two ants!

I think watching ants at work is a sort of universal experience, and you really describe it well. Tenancious is exactly the word for ants, isn't it? They just keep going at thier work no matter what! I wish i was as steadfast as they are!

I loooove the idea of ants having their own personal dimemsion. in a metaphorical sense, it's really true to how they behave.... and in a literal sense it is really nice to think of ants as not exisiting in the same world as me, because they kind of gross me out. Even though, yes, they are kind of mesmerizing.

You write so beautifully, Eva <3

#snowfoxes

This is hillarious. What a concept. I cannot tell if Justin is *actually* an earl, or if he's some how conned his way into being considered one, but either way it's fantastic. I love that he's totally straight faced and lies that he attends Eton without even blinking. Fantastic.

This also opens up all sorts of questions about magic among Britain's elites. What if Harry defected because it turns out Archie is magic? There is great potential for a James Bond/James Potter double identity oh my god.

Percy refusing to use the phrase mudblood is a nice touch and shows that he's still good inside, even if he's made bad choices and is doing bad things at this time. I also found his "they don't pay me enough for this" response funny and relatable. And I mean.... the person who deals with royal incidents should make Big Bucks, so he's not wrong!

This was such a clever idea!

xoxo Renee

Author's Response:

Hey, Renee!

Nope, he's actually an earl. That is one of two truths he told in this entire fic. His dad is a duke or something (I haven't figured that out yet, but like, Justin is not royal, that much I know), and Justin's just like 'oh, haven't you heard?' with the whole diplomatic immunity thing with the wizarding world. There will, probably, be a law about that once Kingsley's the Minister for Magic, but for now, Justin will exploit every loophole he can.

This has opened up so many questions that I do not have even the slightest hint of answers to. Feel free to use this as a jumping off point because I doubt I will write anything answering those questions. That being said, maybe one day I'll write that fic that's Elizabeth I going to Hogwarts...

I never get to write Percy as a main character, and I loved writing him in this. I know it's really short, but I like how he turned out. Percy needs a raise, people! He is Very Important and deserves a Very Big raise!

Thanks for reviewing, and I hope you have a lovely day!

I am so relieved right now. And Ron is so lucky he didn't get publicly exposed, yikes! I'm so proud of him for telling the truth in the end, though.

Mostly I find Ron so relatable here. I mean, I'm not a professional athlete, let alone a professional athlete who's doping, but that's not really the point, is it? There's so much pressure to live up to the expectations in our minds. Ron irritates me because we are similar, tbh. Everythign feels high stakes and personal because there is so much fear of failure or of disappointing others. And you captured that so well without focusing to heavy and hande on it. Maybe if he received more credit and acceptance for what he was actually good at, it never would have come to using the felix, you know?

Anyway, i love George. I love a non-judgmental approach and even though it seems George has his own struggles with substance abuse, I really think he would have been just as kind to Ron even if he couldn't relate.

The scenes at the shop show how well Ron fits there and that he's way more in his element and at peace. I didn't know if the story would end with him becoming more genuinely successful at quidditch or leaving it, and I'm really glad he left. I think it can be hard to except the more "boring" or "adult" parts of our personality as we get older, and maybe having a hig profile job matched his old dreams as a kid - but in reality he like the routine and the low pressure and that's totally fine! You know?

Sorry, i'm getting all in my feelings. Please ignore :P

This fic was brilliant and incredibly original and I'll read a Ron Weasley story by you anyday!

oh dear. oh dear, oh dear. our little ronnikins is doping. i confess, i did not see this plotline coming.

On the one hand it's kind of funny, because he's doing a super illegal thing for such an unnecessary reason... but also it's alarming because he's doing a super illegal thing for such an unnecessary reason. Do you see my dilemma??

I'm enjoying the other members of the team. Pooja and Jonesy and everyone seem like fun people to work with. I have a vgue theory that Kev has a crush on Ron but that might be my imagination. (but i hope it isn't :P)

Writing about Quidditch is so hard, but you handled it really well without letting it get repetative. I just hope Ron doesn't get too destroyed with he gets caught with the felix, because he's obviously going to get caught.

the letter from Hermione at the end is far and away the best use of the author's note space i have ever seen.

Here's hoping Ron's decision making skills will improve shortly :P

Aww, very cute last chapter! I love how you depict Dean as being in denial of his string. I mean, I don't want him to be in denial and clearly he's meant to be with Seamus, but it was an interesting detail that made their relationship fit well into this AU. And it was also a reflection of Ginny, who was also in a type of denial without knowing it.

Ginny is right that Harry should "get to have her" just because his string is broken and her's is (theoretically) platonic. Although, I do think she's a bit hard on Harry. He never pressures here or anything. But the important thing is that she doesn't cave into Hermione about dating someone she isn't interested in that way.

The charm bracelet sounds like a beautiful gift, and and got a little emotional when Ginny said she couldn't make a patronus until she'd seen Luna do it. Sometimes we need to do something in order to realize we wanted it in the first place, and I guess that's what's happening for Ginny here. Thankfully, Luna is patient and didn't mind the wait.

This was such a cute soulmates fic! =))

Hello! Back to read more of this adorable story.

This was really sweet. I appreciate that you didn't linger much on the diary and her trauma from that, because while it's important to acknowledge, Ginny derserves her life to be about more than trauma.

Their innocence as they navigate what it means to be soulmates - not maybe not romantic soulmates - is touching. I cannot fault Ginny for wanting to go to the ball, but it does seem like she's tugging at the string a little, trying to figure out what it means and what it doesn't mean. Meanwhile, Luna clearly already knows. Because of course she does. Their dance at the end was so lovely and sweet.

I'm excited to see how this wraps up and how Ginny learns to understand her relationship with Luna.

Dudley Dursley reluctantly and somewhat awkwardly accepts an invitation to his cousin's wedding. While there, he meets Harry's friends, discovers some fascinating wizarding adult beverages - and meets Cho Chang, who has her own reasons to find herself out of place and drinking heavily at the wedding of Harry Potter and Ginny Weasley.

In the months to come, this unlikely encounter will make him rethink his attitudes towards the magical world, drastically change the course of both of their lives, and change Dudley's relationship with his family forever.

And yet again, brilliance!

Dudley's characterization is so perfect because he's still flawed and he's still prejudiced, but he's also clearly a well-intentioned person. And, well, he's likable. He seems to have a sense of humor. You have me rooting for him, but also rooting for him to change in some ways, as well.

His distrust of magical food is, frankly, very reasonable, considering his experience with the toffee. I'm sureit was all delicious and you'd think he'd realize it was ok if everyone was eatting it, but i understand his reluctance anyway. And it's so sort of thoughtful details that make this fic for good.

I loved the speeches and how you conveyed who was speaking without actually naming names, just the descriptions and the words they chose was enough. And of course, Luna's speech was both the weirdest and the best. Goes without saying, really.

RED ALERT

CHO HAS ENTERED THE BUILDING

(I mean, surely shes been there all along, but let me have my dramatics :P)

When she sits down and they aren't even acknowledging each other, I was really curious how they would eventually connect, or even if this might turn into a crazy How I Met Your Mother thing. But of course Kreacher had to get caught eventually - I can just imagine the look on Ron's face hahaha - and those kind of weird moments do have a way of forging connection.

Man, I love your version of Cho. I really don't think JKR did her justice. Their conversation is very cute, especially that box/quidditch part. I'm not a fan of boxing or anything, but even so it never occurred to me how super weird it is that we have that sport. And I LOVED when Dudley asked about people died in Quidditch and she was like "do people die in your punching in the face thing?" So good!

Honestly, she's very forward and confident here. I know she's hella drunk and everything but even so, it really shows that she has come into her own more since leaving school, because she always came across as kind of timid and fragile in those scenes. Granted, she was going through absolutely devastating things. But either she has grown a lot or Harry and the DA was activwely really terrible for her mental health, which I don't think seems fair. So go Cho! Love this confident vibe for her.

And that last line. *perfection*

Welp I'm definitely hooked on this story. Please expect me to return soon!

xoxo Renee

Author's Response:

DROP EVERYTHING, CHO'S HERE...

It was really fun picturing what cho would be like a few years down the line! I think I've said replying to other reviews here that she gets really short changed by JKR (no surprises there...) And it was so interesting to imagine her at a time when she was more removed from the trauma of Cedric's death. (And give her some fresh new trauma instead!)

Please do return soon! Thank you for the lovely review - the whole lot should be jp on the archives by now :)

He'd become like a brother to you, had he not? A brother in all but blood...and perhaps even that. It was sealed with knife and oath. The clasping of hands and mix of crimson. Albus, you fool. You'd thought it was all figured out. That you'd run off and everything else would fall into place. It didn't.

Wow, this really packs a punch! The thing I love best of all and that I really must start with even though it comes toward the end, is the comparison between Dumbledore's response to Gellert and his response to Tom. Because somehow the parallel there has never occured to me before but YOU ARE SO RIGHT. Of course Tom, with his ambition and talent and charm, would remind him of Gellert - and that would make Albus more weary of him, which canon shows us he was. At least, compared to other professors. But it would also make it hard to shut him down in the same way it was hard to act against grindlewald, and i never thought of that. genius!

It's also interesting the his feelsing for gellert appear to be unrequited in this telling. I wonder how your interpretation might be different in a world where albus tells gellert how he feels. i wonder how much violence that love might have prevented. But him not telling is very believable, especially given the era.

The repeated use of blood is clever, because it stands for violence and death, but also family and connection, and also the idea of "pure blood" all at the same time.

You always manage to create such lucious prose in your work. Really nice!

WHERE HAS THIS FIC BEEN? Like, I know I haven't been around much and maybe I've just missed the buzz on this but seriously... what a *fantastic* first chapter!

I've heard of Cho/Dudley as a ship before, but I haven't read much of it, and I think my biggest reservation is simply finding it hard to imagine how they'd meet. Well, you proved me wrong. This scenario where they both feel awkward as fuck at Harry's wedding is completely believable. Brilliant, just brilliant!

I'm proud of Dudley for trying to mend this relationship, even if he's a little hessitant about it. It really isn't his fault he thought what he did about Harry as a kid. He was indoctrinated, and clearly he sees that now. Not that his treatment of Harry when they were teens is excusable, but I do think it's redemabl, if that makes sense. And the way you wrote his thoughts about it and his weighing of his parents' ideas and his own, shows how challenging it is to overcome prejudice - and also that Dudley is a character worth rooting for. You've taken the handshake from book 7 and expanded it into real growth.

Oh my, though.... it is a bit unfortunate that the first person he interacted with was Luna. I love her but... well, talking about diving in head first hahaha. If only it could have been, like, Dean and Seamus, who could have helped him with Muggleborn experience (Dean) and familiar frat bro vibes (Seamus). :P

He manages, in any case. I do wish he'd managed to be a little more vulnerable with Harry, but these things take time I suppose. Mostly I'm glad Harry wasn't weighed down but Dudley's presence on what deserves to be a wonderful day.

Now. KREACHER. OH MY GOD. This writing of Kreacher is my Very Most Favorite thing, I cannot even tell you. I love that he apparently knocked out/tied up the actual barkeepers because he was determined to do the job. It's just so... fiesty, but also dedicated and loyal and perfect.

I am thrilled to have found this fic, I enjoyed it the most of any fic I've read in a while!

Author's Response:

Thank you so much!  It's funny, I wasn't really involved in any fanfic communities when I first started writing this, but after I'd already got a good way in, I did find that I'm not even the first person to come up with the idea that Cho and Dudley meet at Harry's wedding - I suppose it's one of the few places they can meet without it feeling a little contrived.

I love your idea of some Dudley and Dean or Dudley and Seamus 'bros vibing out' interactions.  I'll have to make sure I write them one day!  (This fic is finished, but I have a sequel in the works that I'll write eventually.)

I had so much fun with Kreacher!  More than the weddings original catering team did, at any rate.  I wish he showed up in this more, but I'll just have to find another excuse to write more of him some day...

Thanks so much for your kind words, and if you read more I hope you keep enjoying it as much :)
