Recommendations FAQ

  1. How do I contribute to the rec section?

To contribute, you'll need to start your own rec blog by going to "Create Blog" and then selecting whatever category you want to make recs in. If you want to recommend something that doesn't have its own subcategory yet or just want to keep everything within one blog, you can just select the broader "Recommendations" category. ^_^

  2. How do I search for fics I want?

You can click a tag directly in a rec, or you can go to +this link. Type whatever tag(s) you'd like in the box (full names, first name/first name for ships, genre, member name - whatever you'd like). we don't typically use tags elsewhere on the site, but if you minimize the number of non-recs that pop up, switch to "Blog Entries" in the blue box or use fic rec as one of the tags in the yellow box.

  3. How do I use tags here in my recommendations?

Tag what you'd recommend the fic for. That list shouldn't include every tag a story has - it's just what you think it does well if somebody was looking for a fic about that character or with that trope. A lot of tags will automatically be recommended when you start to type them out, but if something isn't on that list, you can still include it! We need to manually add each tag to the list, so the "recommended" list is always expanding. ^_^

  4. Can I recommend something that someone else already recommended?

Absolutely. We all experience media differently, so your reasons for recommending it might appeal to someone where a different person's rec of the same thing might not. Someone looking for recs might also be more interested if they see recs of the same story from multiple people - and, of course, each rec is going to mean a lot to the author if they're on FFT. ;)

  5. Do stories have to be posted on the FFT archive?

    Nope! ^_^

  6. I want to move entries from one blog to another. How can I do that?

Get in touch with forum moderators in +this thread; they'll be able to move the entries for you.

  7. Is there a specific form I should be using?

Nope! You can include as many or as few details as you'd like. We recommend linking to the story as well, but your rec blog is your party - as long as you're being respectful of other members and not breaking site rules, you're welcome to express your appreciation for a story however you'd like.

  8. Why did the structure of fic recs change?

We've noticed a pattern for the last several years where the rec forum gets a lot of use during events but very little outside of it. Based on both that observations and anecdotal conversations, we decided to run a poll asking for member input on the recommendations session. The result confirmed what we'd seen and been told for awhile, and in general, if something isn't being used, we'll often get rid of it. However, we did want to preserve a space somewhere on the site for members who wanted to express their appreciation for a fic to do so outside of reviews and award nominations (both of which serve different purposes). The book review blog has been up for awhile and thus far has functioned pretty well, so we decided to expand that and tweak the structure a bit to accommodate more volume. ^_^

  9. Where did the masterlist go?

Masterlists are always a lot of effort to consistently update; we thought that we didn't have another option, but then I realized we could set tags to auto-recommend when people start to type them, which makes a lot of the looking over tags for entries that we used to have to do for consistency less necessary. :elmofire: The other huge advantage with this system is that in the advanced search above, you can do "and," which means that people can search for multiple tags at once - that wasn't possible in the old masterlists.

We hope that helps! If you have any additional questions, please feel free to message a staffer or ask it below.
