Prisoner by Crimson Quill

This is the only story I've ever read that is told from the viewpoints of the several members of the Dumbledore family after the tragedy that ultimately tore the family apart.  In canon, Percival Dumbledore and his wife Kendra seem like faceless, grim people, and their daughter Ariana like an anonymous victim, but here Abbi shows them as they really lived, an initially happy, loving family until tragedy struck, and then just a group of people trying to hold on as best they could.

Abbi depicts each family member with sensitivity and insight. Kendra, now suddenly the single mother of a disabled child, her world shrunk down to nothing beyond the daily household chores.  Percival, the anguished father, locked up in Azkaban for the rest of his life, mourning the loss of his angelic daughter and endlessly reliving the horror of the attack.  Ariana, out of touch with reality, confused, unable to understand or control anything, even herself.  Albus and Aberforth, unable to become a team to shoulder their responsibilities, warring with each other until their doom struck.  It sounds like a Greek tragedy, doesn't it?

This brief story, only 2095 words, carries a lifetime's load of grief, pain, and bitter regret.  But Abbi manages to end it on a note of supreme hope.  You will enjoy reading it.
