Suffer For My Sins is a refreshingly original story in which bits and pieces of an entirely different fictional work keep showing up in new guises, with new functions, in an alternate universe.  Something new is being created out of the pieces of something old.

I am reminded of renaissance builders in England dismantling abandoned monasteries for the carved stone blocks to build their new houses, or classic columns from a 4th-century Romano-British villa now seen to flank the entryway of a modern pub, or a carved standing stone with Celtic or Pictish motifs, once used as a territorial boundary marker two thousand years ago but now doing duty as a gatepost for a late medieval manor house.

Noelle has incorporated 13 canon characters from the HP world (5 major players and 8 supporting actors) in her story about crime, love, and revenge in 1912 Chico's underworld.  It is like an Easter egg hunt to discover these characters one at a time, popping up in roles that are reimagined from the well-known HP canon, and yet hauntingly familiar.  The game becomes the challenge of discerning how the canon characters have morphed into these new roles, picking up the veneer of Edwardian culture while still remaining true to themselves.

And, as in any tragedy worthy of that name, everyone of any importance ends up dead.
