Clarification on Bullying, Personal Attacks, and Harrassment

We've gotten questions and comments throughout the past few years around when exactly people will face consequences for offsite conflict and how we define personal attacks, bullying, and harassment. Since we're updating the rules to clarify a few other things, we wanted to write a blog post expanding on how the site defines these terms a little as well. We don't take involving the site in offsite conflicts lightly. Expecting people to follow our site rules any time they interact with anothe

Congratulations to everyone who participated in our Center for Magical Disease Control reviewing event! Rager of the Decade Wrap-Up

There’s glitter all over the ground in the clearing, and some of the centaurs wander aimlessly, carrying their horseshoes in their human hands, clearly having not slept a wink. The rager of the decade has ended, and a new decade has dawned. But wait! Before you go, there are still a few things worth celebrating. 🥳 Over the course of the month, a whopping total of 769 gifts were exchanged in a total of 46 different wishlists. And while this wasn’t a House Cup competition, we love a good

Personal Social Media Clarification

FanficTalk staff often use social media to promote or supplement activities that take place on the site (i.e., the archives or forums). All information necessary to fully participate in those activities can be found on either the site itself or our official social media accounts; it will not originate on any member's personal account. Many members of FFT (including staff and prefects) do choose to interact outside the site, particularly through their personal social media accounts. While so

Clarification on "Safe Space"

We've gotten some questions lately about what we mean when we say that we want our site (including both our forums and our archive) to be inclusive/a safe space, so we'd like to offer a little clarification. When we say that we want to be a safe space, we mean that we want FFT to be a place where people can participate without being afraid that they will be attacked for who they are - especially if they belong to groups who are often attacked, invalidated, or even have their physical safety

Joining FanficTalk's Archive Why should I join? Well, we're obviously a little biased, but we think we've got a great site here! The Great Collab Results

From December to May this year, all four Houses participated in a massive writing collaboration, working in different teams with new themes and challenges every two months. After six months of hard work (and many, many words), the Great Collab of 2018-2019 has come to a close, and points have been tallied!    Round 1: New Beginnings A fitting theme for the start of a six-month-long adventure, yeah? For round 1, Gryffindor and Slytherin teamed up to form Team Frosty, and Hufflepuff an

How Does FanficTalk Staff? (and how do I join?)

How Does FanficTalk Staff? (and how do I join?) Every month, the FFT admins post an application for all site staff/prefect positions on google forms. Once a member puts in an application, we keep it on hand for three months - so, for example, an application from March might be used to fill a staff position in May. All full staff members are involved in the decision-making process. Outside of existing staff making lateral moves (e.g., Muggle Liaison to Professor), we don't make any bump

Certified Author Status

New and edited chapters submitted to our archive must be approved by an auror (archive validator) before they're made visible to the public, to ensure that they follow our archive's site guidelines. Every so often, we evaluate author accounts to determine whether to grant them Certified Author status (or CA status, for short). Being a CA allows you to bypass the queue and post your chapters directly to the archive; it requires a lot of trust not only in your intentions but also in your abil

All About Activity Streams

Most of us are accustomed to activity streams (or newsfeeds) from popular applications such as Facebook and Twitter.  We have something akin to that here at FanficTalk.  Since it doesn't work identically to more-familiar applications, let's run over some information about it. What is an activity stream?  Simply put, it's a stream or list of activity that occurs on the forums.  Each activity has certain properties (what type of activity it is, time it happened, whether it was posted by someo

Member Groups & Ranks

Here at FanficTalk, we have both member groups and ranks.  Ranks are based on your content (posts, statuses, and blog entries) count.  Member groups determine what you can see and do around the site, with the major difference (aside from staff/prefects) being which common room you can see.  You can be in more than one member group (Professor and Gryffindor, Prefect and Slytherin, etc.), one of which will primary and which will dictate which color your name appears around the site.  A person's pr

Glossary of Common Terms

There are several terms and acronyms which are often used either in the fanfiction world in general or on FanficTalk specifically.  If you're not familiar with them, it can be confusing and intimidating to see so many people tossing them around.  If there's a term missing you think should be included, contact a staffer so we can add it to this list.
